Doesn't matter how infectious it is if it doesn't make people very ill. The common cold is highly infectious. Why do we keep being given these facts, how many people have it, or how infectious it is. The only real fact is how many more will it kill than a normal winter, and how many people are being denied treatment for other illnesses because of it.

@Adaydreambeliever Flu is a killer and especially of old people. Its potency varies from year to year and there have been three pandemics in the last hundred years

@Hasmita but NOT as much as COVID.. this is unprecedented. Flu doesn't kill MOST old people.. COVID can and has been.. and this has been shown to be above that expected for flu.. and it's killed middle aged people... young people.. it's leaving young people with long covid, previously fit people.. this doesnt happen with flu... it is different.... The facts are out there, I don't need to convince anyone.. people can listen to the evidence.. and make up their own mind.. providing they do actually listen to and read the evidence

@Adaydreambeliever Not denying that covid kills a range of people.

My point is that flu is not a minor virus. It kills

I'm more scared of our bumbling feckwits in government constantly getting it wrong... As I understand it this strain was known about in September, WTF did they dangle a 5 day off restrictions over Christmas in front of us when it went completely against the science to do so?
helenS · 36-40, F
Yes; it's not known whether current vaccines will help against it 😬
helenS · 36-40, F
@TJNewton The point is the efficiency of the vaccine – at the moment it's about 90%, meaning that 9 out of ten vaccinated people will not become infected.
TJNewton · M
@Jm31xxx All viruses mutate it isn't more deadlier than it's previous incarnation
TJNewton · M
@helenS Thats the same statistics for the CV virus now
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
Not scared, just irritated... it's fucked up a lot of people's Christmas plans, which is not good... it's going to mean even more restrictions, which is also not good...

I read the other day that the vaccine should be effective against mutations

I am not in the UK but my heart goes to all suffering in the World
maturedragon · 26-30, M
it's mostly in east london, and vaccine will not help with the mutated strain
helenS · 36-40, F
@maturedragon Nobody knows, so far.

If you think it’s scary just wait until it gets to the USA

Nah. We will find a way to beat it too! I have faith
TJNewton · M
It's not more 70% infectious it's spreading quicker because people still can't follow simple basic rules and no i ain't scared of it

@Darksideinthenight2 Actually the facts on spanish flu aren't quite as people seem to believe.. we do have to remember that were we to have faced COVID back when Spanish flu was about then it is likely it would have killed as many.. or more. .Don't forget we have better medical care, more accessible to all, we have steroids, we have respirators, we have vaccines, better sanitary conditions etc etc..
