Organic or Conventionally Grown?

I don't know why the cost of organic food is so much higher than food that's conventionally grown. You would think the cost of the pesticides used in conventionally grown would be added to the price. What's so costly about not using bug spray? 🤷‍♂️

Chemicals are easy to mass produce and most farmers have the equipment, they know what yields the best harvest, that's just what they do.

Organic soil can take years to achieve because much farmland is already polluted. They use natural pesticides and insecticides that are more costly. Nutrition and weed control need more diligence. It's a more laborious process.

It's unfortunate, but many companies capitalize off of doing things naturally.
@AlchemyFox I saw a video of a piece of farm equipment that uses ai and lasers to zap bugs and weeds!

@SooperSarah That's so cool! Most newer farm equipment even utilizes GPS.

I guess we better stop talking shit about AI 😂

I started off my vegetable garden with the intent of reducing the grocery bill..
in reality I’ve spent probably less on veggies at a shop..
on soil, fertiliser, seeds. Bird/ butterfly nets … irrigation..
Point being. I’m not $aving big dollars.
But I know my veggies arnt pumped full of crap that just makes them grow bigger and brighter for sale…

The bugs eat all your crop. I have seen entire fields eaten clean of vegetation by grasshoppers. Not good if you are a human looking to eat the crop the grasshoppers just cleaned out in a day.

Keeping weeds and insects at bay is no easy task.
Organically grown is higer maintenance.
There is also higjer potential for loss of harvest.

Pesticides and chemical fertilizers are more efficient.
Ie - you just spray them on....en masse.
Where as if you are spreading manure - it takes more labour .

Sometimes to keep bugs away - you have to companion plant, (planting two types of plant together)....which then halves your harvest.

Hope this helps
@OogieBoogie It does. Thanks. 🫂 x
