What To Eat When You Have Little Or No Appetite?

I am on a gluten-free diet, and all dairy except hard cheese & Greek yogurt drinks are not digesting well, no spicy food, have to watch the fat content too, and preferably no sweets or fatty red meat. Also can’t have chocolate or coffee.I made a meatball-rice pilaf last night, had made it before and liked it. I had to force myself to eat a tiny portion. Almost everything that I liked from the few times we got something from a restaurant didn’t taste right either. The best thing this week was an egg salad sandwich made from a new recipe with a bit of finely chopped green onion, finely chopped grape tomatoes and a little mayo & salt & pepper. Surprised myself and ate a whole sandwich instead of half.

I have lost 12 pounds since last month due to my lack of appetite.

How about vegan yogurt? I have the Alpro ones.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@MentalMyrtle what’s in vegan yogurt?
MentalMyrtle · 51-55, F
@cherokeepatti either soya, oat or almond usually sometimes coconut.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@MentalMyrtle no oats or soy
GoFish ·
idk i like eating cereals sometimes
GoFish ·
@cherokeepatti nice i eat oatmeal or grits or cream of wheat sometimes
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@GoFish I don’t eat oatmeal or wheat due to them having gluten in them. Oats are supposed to be gluten free but they have something similar to gluten. A bowl of oatmeal would bloat me up badly. I could make a porridge from grits, I have some at home. Could flavor it up a bit for breakfast.

@cherokeepatti oh ☺ i usually have milk and butter and eggs in my grits and salt

My nan suffered with bad ingestion problems and could only eat very plain food in small quantities. One day I bought her a few little jars of baby food and she ate them all and didn't have any problems.
I'm following something called a FODMAP diet.

FODMAP is an acronym for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. The key word is Fermentable and practically all carbs are such to some extent. The intent of the diet is to help reveal what foods may be causing GI distress. The initial stage is to eliminate all the likely candidates then bring them back one at a time. The challenge there is that high FODMAP foods are practically all our most popular comfort foods, and just the suggestion of what's left can dull the appetite. So a tag-along likely affect is a weight loss.

One good thing about FODMAP is that it's pretty popular and there's lots of internet support via AI and recipe suggestions. Just type "Is XXXXX low FODMAP" at a Google AI prompt an you get an immediate answer, followed by an endless stream of explanation. Likewise when looking for an alternative recipe.

@Heartlander I’m craving green veggies including cooked greens, leaf lettuce, green beans, peas etc. It’s cooked at home. Also like to eat most fruits but need to limit any with a lot of acid including fresh pineapple. I think canned will be OK though. Food from restaurants usually doesn’t taste well but it did before this mess started. The only beef I have liked is burgers from the cancer center, they give me a gluten-free bun and make them fresh.
@cherokeepatti

Practically everything that comes in a can or container also has onion and/or garlic powder added, so for the time being it's only fresh or frozen for me. Geez will I hate to discover that onions and/or garlic are my poisons.

I was ahead of the times with gall stones, back when the first hint about having gallstones was made in an ER at midnight.

GI distress is common with my dad's side of the family, which includes me. As a kid, an elderly aunt that lived with us eased her discomfort by adding powdered aspirin (Stanback) to a bottle of coke.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@Heartlander I can’t take aspirin at all, it will make me vomit and anything with it in it too, even Pepto Bismol. It’s the salicylates in them. Some fruits and veggies have salicylates in them but apparently only a certain amount or type will affect me so I have to be careful about them too.

Maybe another egg salad sandwich.
And perhaps consider looking into alternative cancer treatments
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@ElyssTTTrucks They are looking at another treatment.
ElyssTTTrucks · 100+, M
@cherokeepatti Maybe something outside of or in addition to allopathic medicine.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@ElyssTTTrucks I don’t know about that. Even antiparasite meds can cause liver damages.
Cold fruit of different kinds? They don't have to be too far on the sweet side. Melons, cucumbers.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@UnderLockDown Melons and cucumbers are anti-inflammatory. I had a bit of green melon last week and am trying to eat one smaller cucumber a day. Any green vegetable is also anti-inflammatory and they all agree with me except for Iceberg lettuce. I have a large container of leaf lettuce and cucumbers and make a salad for dinner from that. Don’t want much dressing with it though. I cooked a bit of fresh spinach and ate that too. And a piece off flounder.
Pretzel · 70-79, M
some peanuts and and apple?
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@Pretzel Peanuts may not be so good other than maybe 10. I have been eating a couple of peeled apples each week.
Penny · 51-55, F
can you have protein shakes? garden of life protein and greens powder is good. its gluten and dairy free. eta- i have the chocolate but im pretty sure it comes in vanilla too. aslo aloe juic eis supposed to be healing for your stomach. its not great unsweetened though.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@Penny I have a Nutribullet and can make them with almond milk. Probably no syrup, maybe a touch of Manuka medical grade honey and some stevia
Penny · 51-55, F
@cherokeepatti that sounds good :) i hope you feel better soon eta- i usually make them with water. the walnuts make it milky but almond milk sounds good too even creamier.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@Penny Thank you
Fishy · 36-40, F
Broth?
Rosol (Polish chicken soup)
I think the recipe is pretty standard, but I can give you our recipe if you need?
(the pasta is optional btw, its pretty nice either way)
Fishy · 36-40, F
Also, seriously gurl... you probably should get a check up :c
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@Fishy I have had several medical appointments each month. I also had an annual checkup with my primary care doctor besides my oncologist. I have cancer, on chemo pills, had an iron infusion, and now my digestive system is inflamed.

I think you should make a list of the things you CAN eat....stuff that you've eaten, and it sat well on your poor little tummy. Make up some of that egg salad again, for instance. You know you love omelettes with chopped green onions!
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@4meAndyou I can eat almost any kind of green veggies and they are easy on me. Also some fruits. The boy got some more green onions for me and I am making egg salad for us this afternoon.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Shredded lettuce,grilled chicken,bacon bits, blueberry and pomegranite salad. Obviously you can add to it.
