Do you remember your first formal date? (By formal, I mean you asked her out or were asked out by him.)

I was 12. People had birthday parties at the golf club house, and I was supposed to ask a date. I got my older sister to help me write a script when I called Judy. She politely accepted, obviously using a script provided by her older sister. We weren't "sweethearts," but I knew she would say "yes" so I asked her to all the parties that year.

We were acquaintances, but It felt like we'd spent our lives together.
There was an ease and understanding that dominated our interactions, and a connection that couldn't ever be expressed in words.

It was the end of a school year.
Elegant, and poised; I was honored she chose to grace my humble presence.

Instead, fear held my tongue; and another found the words to tell her, what I so desperately felt inside.
At the end of that second year she was engaged, and gone.
