Why are people so intrigued by serial killers

Theres so many shows and documentaries and movies about them, also, why arent there any anymore. Im glad there isnt but just curious.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
For 3 reasons...

1. Validation: It helps them certify that at least they are not as bad as them. Bad = evil, immoral, angry, etc.

2. It is gruesome: People get odd comfort when they see people harming others from a distance. It's not that they necessarily hope and wish for harm to happen, but it somehow makes them feel safer and secure to know it's not them in that situation.

3. Curiosity: People find it interesting to get into the mind of someone who flaunts conventional morality.
Casheyane · 31-35, F
@MarkPaul I didn't really think of 1.

For 3, I get curiosity though. But if I want a show that flaunts morality, I'd watch the shows with Klaus Mikaelson haha. But yeah, I guess you could consider him a serial killer too. Epic vampire stuff.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@Casheyane Yeah, technically vampires are serial killers. They just have a bit more of an interesting backstory to their behaviour.
SW-User
yeah, I never quite understood it. I think media has a lot to do with it. People end up associating serial killers with the "glamor" of Hollywood because of movies like American Psycho.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@DarkSideoftheMoon They are nothing but disgusting parasites. They won't work themselves but will suck money out of people who take personal financial risks to bring new interesting services to others and arrogantly claim they offer protection. Yeah, protection from themselves.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@CrazyMusicLover awful. Gangs do that in the US too to small corner shops. Ive seen it happen and when they dont pay they throw a brick through the windows
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@DarkSideoftheMoon the mafia though, made an industry of it. Just try to park your car, a little kid comes up and offers to protect your car.
caccoon · 36-40
There are still serial killers for sure, but as it's easier to get caught now, they are preying on more vulnerable populations that don't get reported on as often, or at all.

I have always had a weird fascination with it too. I'm not sure why, maybe it's just so hard to understand how you could want to kill someone. I try to picture doing it, and it nearly makes me sick. I also think that it's a way of informing ourselves how bad people can be, in order to protect ourselves from it.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@caccoon why do you say that it is easier to catch one now? Having been involved in the forensics of catching one, albeit not too recently, most have "shown their hand" many times and missed for sometimes many years and allowed to keep killing. Most people just refuse to believe it is happening.
Torsten · 36-40, M
what makes you think there isnt any anymore?
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@samueltyler2 wow thats scary how its still happening in first world countries and our forensic arent getting or capturing them. I see missing people on facebook and wonder where they are.

A guy my age went missing from my town like 10 years ago and they still never found his body. I knew OF him and his poor family is still searching even though the investigators gave up. He wasnt a drug addict or a run away. Its so insane. He went for a ride on his motorbike and was never seen again
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@DarkSideoftheMoon if you really want to get upset, do I search for health care workers who kill
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@samueltyler2 ive heard of this. They say surgeons have the same brain 🧠 wiring or whatever you want to call it, as murderers. It doesnt effect them like it would effect us and they enjoy cutting people open
Casheyane · 31-35, F
I don't know about others but I read 'And Then There Were None' by Agatha Christie because it intrigued me.

As for the psychology behind why dark serial killer shows keep popping up, I don't really know, but maybe it's others way of handling their dark sides? Living vicariously through fiction or something because some things are not really good and moral to do in real life. Maybe emotion release? But for some, it's really just for curiosity and entertainment's sake.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Casheyane then read The Good Nurse, since it deals with a serial murderer. I read the book, haven't seen the film yet. It isn't our until the end of October.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Casheyane oh sorry it wasnt an adaptation it was a movie similar to the plot, well, identical to the plot. I was trying to google it but gave up. Ill try again.
Casheyane · 31-35, F
@DarkSideoftheMoon No worries, and thanks. That's nice of you.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
A better question in my mind is... Why are people so intrigued by serial killers when they don't even try to understand them? For most it's like they just want to see what they achieved, and then call them a monster and be fine with that conclusion. There's a depth to people, I don't enjoy watching their achievements, I enjoy learning about what causes human beings to do what's wrong so that I can avoid becoming one of them and help others who are on the path of becoming one.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@MartinTheFirst same! I just love to learn about the human mind
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
If they'd have better stuff on the other 200 channels the serial killer channel wouldn't be so popular...I think.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@FloorGenAdm is there really a serial killer channel? Where?
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
Morvoren · F
I dunno. Certainly we shouldn’t be glamourising them.

If we have to tell the story, perhaps it should be told from their victims points of view.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@Morvoren now thats something i would watch
SoLeRiMix · 31-35, M
Simply because when we read about them it generates a curiosity 'how it happened then'. When words become visuals then it does pull lots of eyeballs.😇

Such TV shows and web series, I watch them just to see how these sick b*st*rds really committed the crime. Cursing them later is a stress-reliever for me.

In a way, these shows educate us how trusting someone we don't know well or barely know turns out to be a blunder later.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I've never understood it but my guess is either a large part of population is at least mildly sadistic and seeks gruesome thrill and entertainment, another guess is some people are curious about how sick mind works and hopes that it might help them to spot potentially dangerous individuals in the crowd.

German people 🤣 Why...?
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@CrazyMusicLover was an option i couldnt refuse
Whodunnit · M
It's thought by the FBI that there are probably 25 to 50 serial killers active in the US at any given time.

As with many other crimes, it's the crap or unlucky ones that get caught.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Whodunnit theyre probably killing prostitutes ☹️
Whodunnit · M
@DarkSideoftheMoon I'm afraid they do tend to be easy targets, and quite honestly the police never seem to put quite as much effort in when investigating their cases.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Whodunnit yeah they go missing all the time
TexChik · F
They have always been among us throughout time, the media has sensationalized them. And when caught they aren’t put to death in the most horrible way imaginable . Instead they are lauded and pampered in prison .
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@TexChik yeah thats insane

I think that we are all somewhat curious about what is potentially inside of us. We are often more curious about the dark than the light. We all get angry, we all feel like we want to kill someone sometimes but most of us have a firm line. There is always that what if though, what if we didn't have that line. Looking at the best and worst of people is just looking at ourselves and the extremes of what we could be.

As for why there aren't as many prominent serial killers anymore, it is harder to get away with it long enough to kill multiples of people over a long time. Forensic science is far better, we have international databases, we have CCTV, etc. Plus people are far more aware than they used to be. There aren't as many trusting naive hitchikers about.
SW-User
@DarkSideoftheMoon I think I've read about pretty much all of the well known ones too. I find human psychology interesting, particularly in those who become the best at something even if that's the best at being the worst.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@SW-User same i like to understand why and how the human mind works and what its capable of
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@SW-User we only know about the ones who are caught. There are probably many killing today, below the radar. Just look at the reports of doctors and nurses who kill.
had one in our neighborhood years ago. left cornflakes at every crime scene. went by the name Tony the Tiger
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@saragoodtimes you had me worried. I know at least one nurse serial killer worked in hospitals in PA, i was worried you were aware of another.
@samueltyler2 remember reading about him. think he killed patients in Pa and NJ
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@saragoodtimes many! there are 2 Netflix movies coming out about him
Perhaps society including writers are more into their comfort zone now.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@sspec oh my
Selah ·
I think people secretly identify with being blood-lusty, gross, losers.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@Selah true
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
If you think there are none today, take a look at this:

Its trendy.
I would like to think most want to know if understanding what makes them "tick" can help prevent people from getting to that point.

But I fear the interest is more prurient and disturbed, like the fascination with a terrible accident or something similar. 😞
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@bijouxbroussard i think the 2nd
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@bijouxbroussard are you saying that some of those interested have fears they may be latent killer
@samueltyler2 Perhaps not themselves but others, children, etc.
SW-User
It’s human nature that we’re curious about such monsters, it’s abhorrent behaviour we need to understand from the psycho and his/her grim crimes
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@SW-User i guess its the same as watching horror films
SW-User
I think it’s even worse just like the news it’s real and disturbing af

Saying this I don’t agree with giving monsters notoriety

It’s all dark tricky stuff that we can learn from and stay away from *shudders @DarkSideoftheMoon
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@SW-User good point. Like i think there are so many mass shootings because its planting the seed in other sick peoples heads. One of the shooters said they looked up to the columbine shooters
