Arguing with racists really do be like this.

One of the latest things around where I live is for people to say POC refuse to take responsibility for their lot in life... to somehow magically throw off the few hundred years of slavery, generational racism, and being underprivileged as if it has nothing to do with their lot in life, has no meaning at all.

I've been in more than one argument over this.
Ontheroad · M
@specman I guess you didn't read what I wrote. I wasn't talking about the white privilege you aren't aware of.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Ontheroad It's a classic tactic. People who don't have a valid argument like to deflect a lot.
Ontheroad · M
@LordShadowfire Yup, the "whatabout" people... always lame and about as useful in a conversation as porridge.
GlitterEater · 36-40, F
They like to pretend that people who aren't racist don't realize that slavery wasn't an American invention. I don't know if it is something that they believed until late in life so they think it is a common misconception, but whatever the origin is, it is certainly bizarre.
I find it amusing when people who believe America’s better than everyplace else are the ones who bring up the "Everyone has done it" argument. Our national anthem (written by a slaveowner) has the phrase "the land of the free and the home of the brave". If it was a standard the Founding Fathers truly supported, slavery would never have existed here. At any time. No other country claims that standard, either.

@bijouxbroussard Or when you criticize a Republican and they are like "the Democrats do that!" as if they suddenly want Republicans do behave like Democrats.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
I see your point but like, it’s a bad argument because what’s worse: the after effects of slavery or slavery itself? Shouldn’t we try to stop slavery so there are no more after effects lol
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Flenflyys Yeah, but as our friends in the Republican party are fond of saying, America first.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Flenflyys If you think about it though everything is a form of slavery, minimum wage is slavery technically. Generational poverty is much harder because some of the things that cause generational poverty is what is caused by our everyday system.

In affluent neighborhoods are far more likely to do better than higher poverty because of systemic issues

@jshm2 With the exception of Donald Trump. He had no problem being associated with Steve Bannon or Jeff Sessions—at least not while he thought they could help him.

Other countries? The US still has slavery. It is a lucrative business. Most of us ignore it.

@LordShadowfire Where did I try to justify slavery?

Do you think it's your topic because you started it? That isn't a good attitude to have. Is this only about your perception, and the way you feel?

Black people may be used as slaves, along with other racial groups, now. I have no interest in owning or using slaves. That said, most of us are indifferent, and most of us purchase goods and visit places made by slaves. People love going to Dubai, despite the fact it uses Indian slaves to build and maintain it.

Do you think your narratives are any comfort to them? Slavery still exists, but only slavery from 200 years ago is important. It only happens if it's in the movies.

Is this what keeps you up at night? You must be very privileged. Ignorance isn't cheap.

The argument I’ve seen them bring up lately is that hundreds of thousands of white men died fighting for black folks’ freedom, so they owe us!
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@JPWhoo I've heard that one as well.

The cult revolves around illogical fallacies and when cornered, post a meme.

The post is loaded because if anyone denounces this post will be called a racist
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@specman Why would you denounce the post in the first place? You wish to defend the argument of "other countries have slavery, so it's okay that America had it"?
specman · 51-55, MVIP
@LordShadowfire no slavery was a bad thing
BohoBabe · M
@specman Damn, at least try to defend your takes. 😆
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
Lmfao yeah it's like arguing with five year olds, if you know then you know.

Let's ask two questions -

1) Have whites ever been enslaved in large numbers by non-whites?
2) Have American Indians been enslaved as the blacks were?

Search to find out.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@SW-User before I go searching for those answers, let me ask you this. Are you asking that question in order to justify the enslavement of black people?
SW-User
@LordShadowfire

I'm asking those questions because I want to broaden the scope of what we know about historical exploitation. No more. No less. I have NO agenda. For example, many people still believe the Egyptian pyramids were built using slave labor. Why has this belief persisted?
