Hopefully people get enough sense to stop inviting him to gatherings

SW-User
We were at a get together a few years ago and he openly mocked them, called him names, made fun of appearances, not even close to banter
I would’ve felt so uncomfortable being in a place with someone like that.

@SW-User yeah, it was pretty uncomfortable 😞

It's easier for people to write you off if you say something they disagree with. That's why the only thing that proves you're not a racist is "agree with me politically."

That’s pretty easy. Not all racists actively hate. Some just have the sincere belief that their race is superior than others. One of my earliest employers back in the 70s told me how pleased she was with my work, because "usually you people are so lazy." You would never have convinced her she was a racist; after all, she’d hired me. And she thought she was paying me a compliment ! I also had a black coworker for years married to a white man who despised black people, but he thought his wife was an exception.
@bijouxbroussard Micro racisms are insidious.

@hartfire Indeed. They’re more hurtful, because they’re often hidden behind an affable exterior.

My parents are racist to a degree although you would rarely catch a glimpse of it , as they are recognized as sweet folk by those they are surrounded by ....
My dad worked for Jewish employees and would constantly slander them and I would cringe and confronted him on when I got older to no avail ....
My mom would say about the black and Asian people she worked with .... Ohhhh , that one is nice but most of them are lazy and dirty ...I , again cringed , called her on it as I aged ....
I don't know why or how I did not inherit their sensibilities , but fuck I am glad I was given the sense to recognize it as racism and not give them a pass ...
But , it's like you said Fishy, both had black and Jewish 'friends ' , but had some deep seated ugly contradictions ...

Well there's friends and "friends" and also degrees of racism.
