How do i prove my Native American heritage?

My father is still alive but refuses to help me. If i had some of his dna it would probably help ke and i doubt just using my own blood would work.

You can trace your ancestry with a simple swab nowadays. Alao, if your parents or grandparents ever registered as part of one of the "nations" their children and grandchildren are usually able to register. It also depends on the school whether you will get assistance for being native american. I qualify through my father, but I did not get additional funding because I did not live on tribal land. Be sure you read the paperwork from the school carefully to determine whether it is worth the hassle.

You have to go to the bureau of Indian affairs and contact them to do and request a DNA test and also they will be able to look up your tribal ancestry if you know which nation you are from. And to also qualify for registration on tribal roles you must meet the minimum blood quantum level

@KingofBones1 Cherokee for me... My grandmother and great grandfather and mother.

FYI Ancestry.com and 23andme have very few Native American DNA samples on record for comparison. My late Vickie tried and got no link. She had known older relatives that were involved in the Trail of Tears.
You can do it the old fashioned way. If you know your parent's full names and even better if you know your grandparents names and know where they lived and roughly when you can look that up.

Also see if you can find local organizations that will help you out with that. Since you are looking for official recognition for benefits a DNA test likely won't help since at least here in Canada they want historical links to tribal groups so a DNA test that says you are 14% Native American which could include most of the continent that would not be terribly useful.

I know up here the MMF or Manitoba Metis Federation has contacts with historical societies that will do genealogy for you so maybe see if a similar group exists.

Be warned this can sometimes get you mixed up in tribal politics too. So there is that.

Is he enrolled? Maybe ask some of his family members. Most native americans dont believe in giving their dna to those testing websites so it's better to try and get in contact with family members

There must be numerous authentic samples of different blood and genetic characteristics of native American people.
You can have your DNA tested and matched with those - that will be conclusive proof.

Take your Birth certificate to the tribal office and have them look him up. If I’m remembering correctly, you are a part of my tribe. I will help if you need

@lost213 hes not on my birth certificate. He wasnt in my life and wasnt there for me as a child nor signed my birth certificate.
What do you need to prove it for?
@ScarletWitch Ah. Well, maybe start with the school you wish to attend, ask around their offices and specifically what they would require to confirm your NA heritage. Don't know if that helps you, but I hope so.

@ScarletWitch free schooling is a myth. Tribes only give scholarships. Hardly enough to pay for all schooling. But there are many other resources that will help you pay for school.
ScarletWitch · 31-35, F
@lost213 its not a myth. Do some research and educate yourself plz.

Ancestry shows 7% Native American for me so far. Looking forward to my 23 and Me results in a few weeks.

I think ancestry dot com or 123 and me. The DNA or just tracing your own family tree should be effective.

Why would you need to prove your heritage?
Lonelyandyb · 36-40, M
Do you know any of your dad’s family? Maybe find them on FB or something?
AmericanAvenger · 56-60, M
who cares?
ScarletWitch · 31-35, F
@AmericanAvenger i do. Just because you dont doesnt mean you had to comment that you didnt. BYE!
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@ScarletWitch I always think it's hilarious these people care so much they have to tell you how much they don't care.
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
Ive always heard some blood types are more common in native Americans
Northwest · M
You don't blood. A cotton swab is all that's needed by Ancestry and 23andme

Get one of those DNA testing kits.
You don't need your biological father's DNA to prove you are Native. You only need your own DNA. The only thing your father's DNA will prove is if he is your biological father or not.
