Back then, it was based on some weird arrogant tendency to go against a scientific consensus that has been holding up since the 1970s:

And now it's misrepresenting Al Gore as a politician for being a scientist... just because Al Gore, as a politician, pointed at an issue that has been on the political agenda since the 1970s.
Back in the 70s, there was a sense of urgency, and a broad consensus that we should worry about human induced climate change... and then the oil manufacturers started polluting the discourse with pro-fossil fuel think tanks. You know, the kind that doesn't really excist to do research, but are there to promote fossil fuels. Verry comparible with the think tanks that the tabacco industry created to avoid having the conversation about lung cancer.
