It has already damaged the US reputation. It would take two generations of effort and focus and resources to repair the damage already done.

@helenS I do realize that if the US looks to be imperialist, that will be the first domino. But I also believe that the EU would not sit it out and let it happen like the 1930s. That would start a world War.
