Has to be Attlee.

Created the NHS and most of the modern welfare state.
MommyLucy · 36-40, F
@Burnley123 [c=003BB2] As a proud mildly autistic mother to a disabled nonverbal severely autistic son and a mildly autistic daughter a strong welfare state is important to me cause I believe in helping those less fortunate and I think welfare for both the elderly and disabled are important! 🤗🤗🤗 I work as a receptionist in a small hospital which is a lovely job but my 16 year old son is like a toddler so obviously he cannot work when he is older and I hate the idea that taxes shouldn't be used to help the vulnerable cause the rich don't care so that is why I would NEVER vote Republican! 💖💖💖 I think the UK's healthcare system is awesome and Bernie Sanders has been trying for years to create that same system here in America but sadly it seems impossible (because pretty much all Republicans are against it and most democrats rather expand Obamacare instead of creating a Universal Healthcare system) but bless him he tries! 😭😭😭 [/c]
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Right, who voted for Boris Johnson? 🤨 I can wait all day if necessary 😩

More disappointed than angry 😐
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@SunshineGirl more baffled at how you can review the evidence and come to that conclusion
MommyLucy · 36-40, F
@SunshineGirl [c=008099] I definitely didn't! 🤗🤗🤗 After you told me I voted for Attlee! 💖💖💖 [/c]
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SunshineGirl
Right, who voted for Boris Johnson?
It must have been trolling. Not even Carrie (and perhaps especially not her!) would have picked Bojo.
JasminD · 22-25, F
I was going to vote for Tony Blair, being a Labour leader that I think did some good in this country, irrespective of your stance on the whole Iraq war, but seeing people's posts and comments on Clement Attlee, I've just read up on him.

Wow! Hell of a guy. Started so many good initiatives when this country was deep in the mire after winning WWII (proof, I guess, that there's no winners in wars). So, I voted for him.

Think we need a person like him in this day and age.

OldBrit · 61-69, M
@JasminD too true we don't have truly inspirational leaders any more he was one i of them.

We could certainly do with some of his spirit in leaders now.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@JasminD Tony Blair is certainly in my top three. For many years I associated him with the Good Friday agreement and achieving a generation of peace in Northern Ireland. More recently, however, I have learned that the foundations were laid by John Major through five years of really difficult personal diplomacy with politicians in Ireland.

Clement Attlee was the perfect consensus politician for building a new society after the war.
@JasminD Tony Blair. AKA Bill Clinton in drag.

Can't seem to remember or find who it was who came up with that one originally.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Interesting that a lot of people voted for Thatcher but didn't comment.

The 'Shy Tory' voter syndrome even on SW.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Burnley123 Public opinion has shifted to the right. Starmer is attempting the capture the middle ground. Therefore I suppose it is natural that he sits somewhat to the right of Blair.

I am left leaning. Blair's government was a breath of fresh air after the reactionary government and stagnation of ideas in the 1990s. So one of the best things about it was that it was not Conservative. Having a socially progressive, young and optimistic government was a virtue in itself.

I hate the autocratic managerial style of the modern Labour party, but I do have rather more faith in the integrity and vision of Starmer (based on his career as a public servant), if only they are zble to see the light of day once in office.

OldBrit · 61-69, M
Gotta be Attlee most have subsequently tried to dismantle what he built.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@OldBrit That is my feeling exactly.
1954zebedee · 70-79, M
Not sure how anyone can vote for Blair. He should be in front of the Courts on war crime charges.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@ninalanyon From what I understand, it was a necessary re-requisite for him to be able to take the country in a radically different direction. Gordon Brown was the more intelligent half of the partnership, but lacked personal leadership qualities.
1954zebedee · 70-79, M
@SunshineGirl good Friday agreement happened during his tenure but it was John Major who paved the way. Blair took the credit. Nothing else can possibly outweigh his war crimes.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@1954zebedee Yep, I mentioned that in a message below. I only began to realise how much of a personal role John Major had when I was watching anniversary documentaries this year.
MommyLucy · 36-40, F
Awww! 💖💖💖 [c=008099] I don't understand politics that well but I would of chosen the man who created the UK's version of Universal Healthcare cause I personally hate our countries healthcare system (WAY too expensive) but I don't know if he was ever Prime Minister or not? 🤔🤔🤔 [/c]
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@MommyLucy The UK isn't the only country to have universal healthcare. Norway has it too and ours doesn't seem to be suffering quite so badly as the UK NHS.
MommyLucy · 36-40, F
@ninalanyon Awwww! 💖💖💖 [c=009E4F] I LOVE the idea of Universal Healthcare cause I don't understand how someone in power can defend a healthcare system that only benefits the rich when there are sadly people who have gone homeless from healthcare bills or people sadly going bankrupt and while Obamacare does help a little in reducing this it is still heartbreaking to me so I wish we had Universal Healthcare cause it seems like the compassionate thing to do! 💖💖💖 Our family has very good health insurance (super good by our countries standards) but that is not the point as I know many have suffered by our cruel healthcare system and not everyone is as lucky especially without Obamacare guaranteeing you medical coverage things can go very bad and I find it cruel! 😭😭😭 [/c]
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@MommyLucy A huge number of countries have universal or near universal health care. There is a Wikipedia article that summarizes the situation in those countries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_with_universal_health_care. Of course the actual standard varies wildly depending on the resources of the countries concerned.
JasminD · 22-25, F
I'm more concerned of those that picked Theresa May and Liz Truss....or, more to the point, those that put Theresa is the same bracket! I bet she's spitting feathers, as they say 'round here!

🤣
JasminD · 22-25, F
@Burnley123 But, by all accounts her deal on Brexit would have been better than that which Johnno gave us.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@JasminD It would have been slightly milder. Brexit was a sham anyway.
JasminD · 22-25, F
@Burnley123 I would never have voted for it. I was too young at the time.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
I'm surprised by how many picked Margaret thatcher.

I'd probably pick Attlee or Tony Blair out of the list... even though I confess I don't know all that much
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Scribbles She's very divisive, but evokes almost mystical devotion from her supporters. Both Liz Truss and our current PM Rishi Sunak claim to be 21st century Thatcherites.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@SunshineGirl I find it crazy that People still idolize her
But then people here still idolize some past presidents.
calicuz · 51-55, M
It's always been Boris Johnson for my money!!!

calicuz · 51-55, M
@SunshineGirl

Didn't work!!! 🤦🏽

SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@calicuz I know where I'd like to stick that sabre . .
calicuz · 51-55, M
SW-User
The best that never was would have been John Smith
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@SW-User Possibly. Blair and Brown were largely faithful to his agenda (and kept Labour in power for three terms).
SW-User
@SunshineGirl Blair should be in prison.
Patty81 · 41-45, C
The head of lettuce should be on the list
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Patty81 Unfortunately it didn't secure the support of the paid up Tory membership 🥬
I wouldn't give you two cents for the lot of them.
R5000 · 41-45, M
I wanted that to say Ramsay not Brown
Woah ! 13 people voted for Thatcher ?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@bijouxbroussard I wasn't one of them!

She did awful things but was very successful on her own terms. Like Republicans use Reagan and Lincoln as benchmarks (or did), British Conservatives use Thatcher and Winston Churchill.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard she's still revered by many. She was the PM as we emerged from the largely economically awful 70s bug she smashed many things she put every one of my family (bar one) out of work at a single stroke so I can never forgive her. I personally loath her with a deep seated passion.
I'd argue much of our problems, brexit, housing crisis, crumbling infrastructure due to lack of investment, no coordination across many policy areas etc can be directly linked to her leadership. We're still suffering as a result of her Europhobia, council house sell off and privatisation neoliberalism.
