Just curious about how Brexiters feel about this WW2 poster

Lots of people who support Britain's exit from the EU are convinced that being part of a community of nations is a hindrance and not an advantage. Many feel nostalgia for the time when Britain "stood alone" in WW2 and see that period in history as proof that Britain is at its finest when it's "alone", and yet...

Thoughts?

Lots of people who support Britain's exit from the EU are convinced that being part of a community of nations is a hindrance and not an advantage.

That's largely a load of bollocks. Who has claimed that Britain stood alone, not grateful for the contributions of the Ghurkas, the Poles, the Canadians, the Free French? ..... As @KiwiBird recently pointed out, the UK abandoned its former Commonwealth partners like Australia and New Zealand when it joined the EEC. The deals so far may be small - nobody envisaged a global pandemic - but re-building that trust and forging new alliances was never going to be an instant achievement.

It sounds to me like you're setting up a man of straw to knock down

@ArtieKat Sorry, A.K. - My comments were the result of scanning, rather than carefully reading, a number of posts. They should not have been directed at you.

That said, it seems to me absurdly inappropriate for someone to have likened Brexit to any aspect of WW2.

It's likewise absurd to suggest that the majority of Britons were not grateful for the war support they got from the commonwealth countries, from the free French, From other Europeans and some Americans who made their way to Britain and joined the fight, plus all who formed resistance groups in occupied countries (including Germans in Germany) and ultimately the USA.

@Gorps Thanks for clarifying.

@ArtieKat Thanks for the prompt! 🙂

I read that after the vote to leave. One of the most goggled questions was " what does it mean" .... Seems like the type of question that should be asked before the vote....a good example on why it's important to stay in touch with what's happening

That's an absurd and frankly rather offensive comparison.

Most of those wanting to leave the EU did so for various political, economic and business reasons; but what mattered was leaving the "European Union Of The Cities and Regions". (Yes, that is its official, full title - and note it does not say "Nations"!).

That is not the same as leaving the geographical "Europe" of a polyglot assortment of over two dozen, very different but generally friendly and co-operative, highly-individual nations.
Ya, my country was there when Britain called and that shouldn't be forgotten.
TwistedApe · 51-55, M
@Guardian so was mine in both world wars. We had a bit of a tiff with the great man Winston Churhill when we brought our troops home from the desert to fight the Japs. He was quiet Eurocentric in that regard. But there were a lot of Aussie ships and naval personel at Normandy. And some of our Generals were right up there in the planning. Though mkw, they are lost in the forest of the past.

Clearly that poster makes sense. But then, I'm not a Brexiter.

I voted Remain. We Left.

I am now an Irish citizen.

@jshm2 How many of these So called "Brexiteers" have you actually met?

I've honestly not heard any Brexiteers referring to the glory days of WW2 or wishing that we were that same England. I've heard a lot of arguments for Brexit but that has not been one of them.
MartinII · 70-79, M
You are confusing two things. I am strongly Europhile but strongly opposed to the EU. And like all Remainers, you attack Brexiteers while saying nothing about why you support the EU.
ElleryQueen · 61-69, M
The poster references were to the Commonwealth nations (like Canada and Australia) and the remaining parts of the Empire.
They’re still part of NATO.. what’s the problem?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Notice that not one of the nations in the poster is France...😷
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Gorps No. My Party would be all about me. I would spend all night listening to Brian Cox, Neil De Grasse Tyson, Stephen Fry a couple of others. (Billy Connolly sadly wouldnt make the cut now..)😷
Gorps · 51-55, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Sorry you don't think Connolly would be a worthy dinner companion. Amazingly, (if you've seen some of his more outrageous 'comedy'routines) he can be totally charming, empathetic, and is a very intelligent man.

@Gorps Dont get me wrong. I have been a big fan since the Black leotard and banana boot days. But the parkinsons has slowed him to a crawl which he admits himself. In fact I would be happy to throw the party in his honor.. Hes a wonderful storyteller...😷
Lots of Brexiteers voted for Brexit for a false premises of a better economy, yeah it was a bad decision.

There is alot of snobbery in this debate from the elites as the video below demonstrates:

@BritishFailedAesthetic It was clear that a lot of people who voted Leave did not want to be told that it would fuck us up, even when the evidence was staring them in the face.

They made their bed, they lie in it.

In addition to my previous comment, it’s precisely because I support a “community” of nations - all friendly nations - that I oppose being part of a narrow, and narrow-minded, organisation of a few.
TwistedApe · 51-55, M
I think you will find that Britain AND the Empire stood alone against NAZIs (like the one the Canadian PM so idolizes).
Gorps · 51-55, M
@TwistedApe
NAZIs (like the one the Canadian PM so idolizes).

You get the prize for the most brainless, asinine comment of the week.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
Not sure you can really count India or Zimbabwe.
@Bumbles Indians and Africans did serve in WWII. A very complicated history.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@bijouxbroussard Indeed. India is very ambivalent about their often incredible war record in support of the British and its empire.

Not sure if any of the colonies were in Europe

We want trade with our Dominions back?
Not British but I know there's a world of difference between strategic alliances and trade pacts
They really wouldnt care.
Brexit was never about immigration.
