Putin signs law to mobilize 300,000 Russian men of fighting age

To join the front line as cannon fodder for the war against Ukraine. Within minutes Google searches for one way plane tickets out of Russia to the few remaining Russian friendly destinations including Tel Aviv jump 400%. Airline seat prices also sky rocket.

The law has also been changed to make avoiding conscription a crime punishable by jail time.

nato took away russias buffer zone, planted ...

You, and Putin, seem to be ignoring a three-way treaty known as the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.

Essentially, Ukraine agreed to give up all its nuclear weapons to Russia in exchange for safety from a U.S. or Russian invasion. Russia's invasion of Ukraine violates that treaty. And as a signatory to that 1994 Budapest Memorandum, the U.S. has a definite interest in righting Putin's current wrongs.

In the final version of the deal, Russia promised not to attack Ukraine. While the U.S. and the U.K. assured Ukraine they would aid if it was attacked by Russia, that promised aid did not guarantee military support like a NATO country would receive.

In 2009, Russia and the U.S. announced that the assurances in the Budapest Memorandum would continue to remain in effect in the future.

Sorry, dude, but Russia promised specifically NOT to invade Ukraine, and the U.S. promised specifically to ASSIST Ukraine if the treaty were ever violated. And that's JUST what the U.S. is doing now.
@Ferise1 The West found out that Russian tanks suck, Russian missiles can't be depended on, Russian planes are easily shot down, and Russian ships are not well protected. The West found out that the Russian army does NOT have strength in depth, is exhausted, is running out of supplies, and Russian soldiers don't really want to die for Putin's expansionist dreams.

I have nothing against the Russian people. I had good friends in grad school who were raised in Russia. I think Putin was good for Russia for more than a decade. But those days are over; he's spending far too many Russian lives for too little gain.

@Ferise1 We found out how much the oligarchs and kleptocrats have weakened Russia. We found out Russia is effectively a gas station with nukes. But Russians aren't stupid enough to want to die in a nuclear suicide.

There is something very rotten in Moscow, and it's Putin and his regime. Bottom line is that he can't risk his regular military - his regular army. He has just enough trained and equipped soldiers to protect his nation, not enough to fight a war on foreign soil. He can defend his nation, he cannot, as he has already proven, project his might beyond the borders of Russia.

His military and its command structure is old, inexperienced and worn, and not prepared to fight a war. His equipment and armament are outdated and the few modern pieces of war fighting machinery they possess are stretched beyond their capabilities, low in numbers and not well maintained.

He could fight a short, limited campaign and now that his military has been stopped and in some places routed, he has no choice but to attempt to use a few hundred thousand as cannon fodder hoping sheer numbers will turn the tide. It won't work, but he will try - if he doesn't, it is over for him. His choice is to fight and come up with some sort of win, or die... literally, die.

Right now he has been stopped and needs more soldiers that are trained, well equipped and who have an adequate resupply system. He doesn't have the time or resources to properly train them or build the infrastructure to support them.

None of this bodes well for him, and the problem with that, is he will have to more and more resort to heavier artillery, missile and air attacks to halt the Ukraine forces... that means more collateral damage and more dead Ukrainian civilians. I suspect things are going to get real ugly, real fast and the war crimes will escalate.

In the end, he will lose both the war and very probably his life. There is one wild card in all this and that is tactical nukes. I cannot see him using them because it will quickly escalate the war into a battle with NATO
- a war he and his country cannot possibly win. Nobody can win that type of war and as long as he remembers that, the wild card won't be played. The problem there is when a wild animal is cornered, all bets are off.

NATO and the Ukraine have no choice. The only one left with a choice is Putin.

@Ontheroad ooh I’m sooo sorry. Should I have kept my comments to grunts only so that he could understand?
Ontheroad · M
@justanothername I'm thinking stick drawings would be about his speed. You could caption them, but no words with more than one, at most two syllables.
justanothername · 51-55, M
@Ontheroad gotcha :)
Abstraction · 61-69, M
In January Russia was recognised as the world's second best army in the world. Now they are recognised as the second best army in Ukraine.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@helenS Profoundly, profoundly disturbing. My humour is in some senses relief that they are being found wanting and thereby humiliating the vicious regime. Also very little is said about the forcible transfer of Ukrainians to Russia also. I hope their army collapses and leads to regime collapse. It's quite possible.
LegendofPeza · 56-60, M
@Abstraction They're actually the third best army in Ukraine. Wagner's bunch of mercenaries , misfits and convicts are a better fighting force than the regular Russian army.
graphite · 61-69, M
@Abstraction Russia kind of got exposed as a military fraud when its troops were found crying in the battleifled, calling their mothers with their cellphones, and that overweight, out-of-shape pilot got shot down. No way a guy in that kind of shape gets anywhere near a US fighter jet.

It's good that a lot of people there don't agree with him. Special place in hell for Putin

Adstar · 56-60, M
Looks like a lot more people have to die to satisfy Putins grand delusions..
@Adstar great. NATO also doesn't threaten Russia, then? So whatever happens was random.
tindrummer · M
@Roundandroundwego putin's megalomania isn't random if that's what you mean
Adstar · 56-60, M
@Roundandroundwego NATO has been on the border of Russia for over 20 years in Latvia Lithuania and Estonia .. NATO has not invaded Russia in all that time.. So the stupid argument that Ukraine joining NATO would start a NATO invasion of Russia is just brain dead fear BS from Putin to the Russian people.. Now because of Putin's madness Finland and Sweden have both Joined NATO and so the length of the NATO borderline with Russia has more then doubled..

The absolute stupidity of Putin to invade Ukraine and create another enemy for the Russian people is just that,, Brain dead madness.. What a moron Putin is.. A moron leading the Russian people to economic and political disaster..
tindrummer · M
great majority of russians have been supporting putin and I don't think that will change
tindrummer · M
@justanothername I know that but most russians don't have to be threatened - they believe what putin's media tell them and support his war
justanothername · 51-55, M
@tindrummer They either don’t have a choice or they don’t get a choice.
tindrummer · M
@justanothername ok - won't argue - google it

Putin is losing his mind . This war has reminded us that Russia is not the Soviet Union. Russia is a third rate country with oil and a nuclear arsenal .

Wonder how this will affect Russian hockey players still over there? At least one has been barred from getting out: Ivan Fedotov, signed by the Flyers a few months ago, forced into the Russian military a couple days later.
Ukraine did that with all their men, already.
War is very important to murka, so we can't stop it.
