JT has just resigned. MC was a former Bank Governor for Canada & England. Given that Canada's economy is hurting and an election is a year away. Should MC become PM, or Chyrstia Freeland or someone else?

I think both are very qualified. Chrystia is an extremely competent person but some say she doesn't resonate with all Canadians.

I think many have been talking about how Chrystia Freeland is popular with the liberal party, especially after her “heroic” resignation recently. I think this can be used as to show that she was against Trudeau’s policies, to disassociate from him, and win popularity, since Trudeau has become very unpopular, I guess it is important to make that disassociation with the upcoming candidate for the liberals. Of course it is silly, because she was in office for long, so resigning recently doesn’t mean much. Feels to me like another Kamala who will fail, because people associated her with the status quo and the current unpopular government.

@BittersweetPotato I agree 100%

I don't know much about the Canadian political system but I would expect that that the PM has to be an elected MP, and approved by the majority political party.

@JimboSaturn good question 🤷‍♂ I'm American so I don't know anything about parliamentary politics
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@tenente The prime minister is the head of the federal government. He or she is also an elected member of Parliament. In the party system, the leader of the party with the most support in the House of Commons becomes prime minister. Party leaders can be prime minister even if they are not an MP. For example, John Turner spent most of his term as prime minister outside the House. But convention would urge them to seek a seat in a general election or a by-election.
ArtieKat · M
@JimboSaturn Thanks for that clarification.

Not Carney. Others have a 'wider perspectve' on the needs of Canadians than does a banker.
Not a fan of her personally, but Freeland has already proven she can manage the orange toddler down south.
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Totally agree! If he hates her, that should be a plus added to her without much efforts on her own. I feel he is intimidated by strong women.
@BittersweetPotato Definitely.

As long as conservatives hate him I'd say Carney is the right person for the job if possible. .

Who on SW understands Canadian politics? According to what I’m reading there’s very few!!
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
Mark can’t as he’s not an elected minister in the parliament!!
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
@Guardian No such thing
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
@Guardian That’s why he could not be named to replace Christia Freeland

American here. We're a republic so our rules are different than Canadas parliamentary system. It's a good question, and looking at the rules (from 2020), apparently, yes, you can be elected to lead the Liberal political party in Canada (and be PM in this example) without being a congressman.

That's wild

Is there a reason Canadian Politicians are so young? PM Trudeau is only 50. MP Pierre Poilievre is 45 and PM Jagmeet Singh is 46. President Biden is 82 and President Trump is 78. Why does Canada get all these young bright leaders and my country is run by Geriatrics?
@tenente Usually they are not young. Trudeau was a notable exception. The NDP (Singh's party) had a huge surge in membership among young people a few years back thanks to the late Jack Layton. Sadly he passed but his leadership got a ton of young people elected that honestly were probably surprised they were elected too. The NDP was a distant 3rd protest vote for decades. Jack Layton is the reason it is not a serious party in Canada at the national level.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow why is "Jack Layton is the reason it is not a serious party in Canada at the national level"?
@Guardian He generated a serious movement of support for left wing ideas in Canada and was the right person at the right time. Think like Bernie Sanders 2016 but probably even bigger impact. He got people elected in provinces that didn't have any NDP seats at all.

And if he had not died of cancer he likely would have been PM by a landslide and one of our most popular PMs ever. He likely would have taken the party from a distant 3rd protest vote to running the country.

Now unfortunately he also illustrated our own problems in our country long term. Jagmeet Singh has nearly an identical platform, is a great speaker and passionate, principles, but alot of people can't see past the turban.

Justine is staying on until the election which will probably be early Spring 😝
@Lilymoon BOOOOO!
redredred · M
My understanding is they are considering replacing Justin Castro with a burned-out 60 watt incandescent light bulb. Just about as bright.
@redredred Really? All you have is dad jokes and a conspiracy theory from the 70s?
