JT has just resigned. MC was a former Bank Governor for Canada & England. Given that Canada's economy is hurting and an election is a year away. Should MC become PM, or Chyrstia Freeland or someone else?

I don't know much about the Canadian political system but I would expect that that the PM has to be an elected MP, and approved by the majority political party.
@ArtieKat I think he can be made Acting PM or a Liberal MP can stepdown.

@Guardian 🤔Wouldn't they need to hold a by-election in the latter case? I'm guessing (I admit) that the Canadian system is modelled on that of the UK, with King Charles as constitutional head of state.

@ArtieKat The party can elect a new PM and there doesn't need to be a general election but the Liberals are going to be brought down in a non confidence vote in Parliament which will trigger an election.
@ArtieKat probably

@JimboSaturn I understand that part, (it's happened in England before lol) but could Mark Carney, who is not an MP currently, be elected as PM?

@ArtieKat oh ok

@ArtieKat apparently, you can be chosen to lead the Liberal party in Canada without being elected... crazy right?

@tenente I don't get it, don't you need a riding? What if there is a general election?
tenente · 36-40, M
@JimboSaturn good question 🤷‍♂ I'm American so I don't know anything about parliamentary politics
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@tenente The prime minister is the head of the federal government. He or she is also an elected member of Parliament. In the party system, the leader of the party with the most support in the House of Commons becomes prime minister. Party leaders can be prime minister even if they are not an MP. For example, John Turner spent most of his term as prime minister outside the House. But convention would urge them to seek a seat in a general election or a by-election.

@JimboSaturn Thanks for that clarification.
