CLEAR MISTAKES IN THE BIBLE

Maybe if a few people here could refer to the writings of someone like Karen Armstrong then the level of debate could rise. Karen Armstrong is by no means some desperate defender of the Bible as some sort of inerrant/infallible Word of God, she simply traces its history and explains the intentions of the Biblical writers.

A simple example is the two totally irreconcilable accounts of "creation" recounted in Genesis. When the version of the Old Testament we now have was finalised around 600-800 bc no attempt was made to amend the accounts so as to make them compatible. The redactors of the OT knew and recognised that historical/scientific accuracy was not the purpose of the words that had survived the passing of time. The stories they dealt with had another intent - I'll leave this to anyone who might be interested to refer to Karen Armstrong's fine book "The Case for God" (and others)

Sadly, since the Bible was placed into the hands of the general public (this a development of the printing press, the Protestant Reformation and mass literacy) many did begin to look for the type of knowledge which was then becoming the vogue - verifiable history. Also expecting a Word of no "contradictions", perfect, as befitted the type of God they saw as having written it!

Really, picking put contradictions in order to demean the Bible is in part only to demonstrate a lack of knowledge of its history and of its intent.

@SW-User the other thing she talks about is how the scribes had the previous versions so it enabled them to have constancy but many people now use that consistency as a way of proof of the bible being the word of God without realizing this important fact
Lionehaza · 31-35, M
@Axeroberts Cruci -fiction Jesus never died on a cross.
after the deciples flee far from jesus and they heard that jesus was crucified and dead. They gather together and started to talk about what they here not see.And while they were talking Jesus comes towards them....They were so frightened that jesus could not come closer to them.
The question is ,why they were frightened?
Because they tought he had escaped from the dead world and he is the spirit of death.....since they couldnt belive him that he is not spirit he said do you have something to eat and dring...So he ate and drink to prove them that he was not dead.... Jesus was not crucified as the the word implies its cruci fiction. He prove that he is in blood and flesh and that he never died. His God heard his prayer and took him alife. The one they crucified was the Juda .God gave juda the face of jesus and the faracies took juda thinking he was jesus.Since Gave juda the face of jesus ,juda was made unable to talk.So when he was asked if he claim that he is God he never spoke becouse he was juda the traitor....They think that they crusifyied jesus but never rather God took jesus to the heavens and juda was crucified. That is why if you read the end of juda in the bible there is different storry.Contradicting storry. They never kill him with certainityJesus prayed had been saved by God from thier torment like he save Abraham from fire.
Abbenthewarwolf · 18-21, M
@SW-User ur username would make a cool race 🏇 I like that.
Jesus was never crucified huh? Boy, you sure twist scripture. You have no idea what you're talking about.
Given proper Bible study, without taking verses out of context, shows that there are no contradictions in the Bible. You should study before you say things.

Ahaziah’s being “a son of 42 years” in his reigning, refers to his being a son of the dynasty of Omri which was in its 42nd year. Putting the two Scriptures together reveals that Ahaziah was 22 years old when he began to reign during the42nd year of the dynasty of Omri, of which he is also an integral part.

Not so much as a mistake, rather than a false prophecy; Ezekiel 26 goes into great detail regarding a prophecy from God. It describes how king Nebuchadnezzar II and his army would destroy the city of Tyre, and that it would be rendered “no more”.

It never happened. The king never even stepped foot in the city.

It still exists today and has actually grown in size, thanks to the land bridge Alexander the Great built when he took the city.
OctoberEyes · 26-30, M
@Disgustedman Nope.

I’m intellectually honest. If you could show me where in Ezekiel 26 it states that Nebuchadnezzar wouldn’t actually do anything, and that it would be a few hundred years before a man named Alexander the Great fulfilled the prophecy, I’d change my mind.

But it doesn’t say that. It only mentions Nebuchadnezzar as the agent of these actions. Hence, a failed prophecy.
Alexander did destroy the city
He captured the city, but it still functioned, which is demonstrated by the fact that within 18 years of this so called “destruction”, it had returned to its former glory and was again a leading city in Phoenicia.

And even if you were right, it would still contradict the prophecy. It’s made very clear in Ezekiel that Tyre would be forever destroyed.

Ezekiel 26-14 - the city “will [c=BF0000]never be rebuilt[/c]”
Ezekiel 26-20 - ”I will make you dwell in the earth below, as in ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, and [c=BF0000]you will not return or take your place[/c]”
Ezekiel 26-21 - “I will bring you to a horrible end and [c=BF0000]you will be no more[/c]. You will be sought, but [c=BF0000]you will never again be found[/c]”

But we know this isn’t true. Tyre continued and grew as a city. Today, it is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. This prophecy could not have failed more.

@OctoberEyes tl;Dr You may be intellectually on this but all you do is babble babble babble Short and simple statement obviously you don't agree with me okay I don't agree with you end of story goodbye.
OctoberEyes · 26-30, M
@Disgustedman “Babble”

You mean present a structured argument that demonstrates my claim?

What part specifically do you not agree with? What claim have I made that you believe is incorrect?

CLEAR MISTAKES IN THE BIBLE
Kings 8:26
Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri, king of Israel.

Chronicles 22:2 (ESV)
Ahaziah was forty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri.
Random3838 · 36-40, M
@Lionehaza you were proven wrong about this the other day on another one of your posts. You purposely changed the age yourself. The ESV translation has the same age for both passages.

STOP with the falsehoods.
Lionehaza · 31-35, M
@Random3838 hebrew bible is the only bible from which all other bibles should be translated.Sir i have seen it there tooo. The mistake is there and there are also contradictions in ESV version.u like it or not...
Lionehaza · 31-35, M
@Random3838 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.
Ynotisay · M
When you have a book of fables, with a ton of translations and ongoing edits to the 'word of god,' mistakes happen. I think it kicked off with "In the beginning..."
Ynotisay · M
@Lionehaza Uh....are you sure you want to run with that? One thing is natural and one thing is created by humans? Come on now. Gotta' think it through.
Lionehaza · 31-35, M
@Ynotisay human never created a thing, rather assembel sort and organize resources that were created by God....ynotisay you may argue with me forever but you cant lie to your inside nature that confirms the existence of God.Its not debatable that God exist. The solar system is so perfect that its not possible and probable for such system ,a system of your body, biodiversity, solar systems to work perfectly unless its been controled.Scientists were concerned how such perfect harmonious sytem could be created due to explosion...
Ynotisay · M
@Lionehaza OK. But let's remember this. You don't get to tell me what to think or believe. Right? I'm done now. Have a good one.
Lionehaza · 31-35, M
@SW-User But the mistakes are not tolerable....the old testament clearly described the character of GOD that God do not sleep or tired. That GOD has no image and statues.....that God does not eat or drink.....And after few thousands later in the new testament God started to have image ,started to sleep eat drink, feel hunger.....So we ask why?So you said that he came to this world in the form of jesus to understand how we suffer and died on the cross for our sin...is it not illogical...zer is no need for GOD to be human to understand how we feel and suffer because he is all knowing.....He don't need to die so that we can enter paradise....No one can ask why he forgives the one who commits the greater sin.No one can ask God if GOD forgives Adam when he was in paradise.... If some one kill 1000 children with a gun and if the judge says i slaughter my only son for you loss to thier mothers, will they accept such kind of judgment?do you consider it justice?
[big]They got rid of a few well a lot of books from the Bible. To hide things just like with what they do with other things.

Clear ha ummmm maybe not. Maybe some are trying to cause problems again or to "try to change/get rid of things" that are true..

🤷🏼‍♀️[/big]
Lionehaza · 31-35, M
Have you ever read this verse in the chapter of revelation.
And the Book [of deeds] will be laid [open], and you will see those who forced others to reject God's messages filled with dread at what is in it, and they will say, "Alas for us! What a record is this! It leaves out no deeds, small or great, but accounts for it!" They will find everything they ever did present [before them]. Your Lord will not be unjust to anyone.
SW-User
No such thing. There are only mistaken interpretations.

@SW-User Please explain to me how he turned a woman into a pillar of salt, struck people down, and killed mankind in a flood, then suddenly stopped....and allowed horrific events like the Holocaust, to occur?
Thodsis · 51-55, M
The existence of gods is probably the obvious one. ;)
SW-User
The Bible is like a jigsaw puzzle. All the pieces belong, but some are missing.
Some interlock well, others don’t seem to fit unless you jam them together. But don’t force them to fit, otherwise you will get a distorted picture.
Castenmas · M
Is this the “that’ll shalt not commit adultery” shortly before impregnating Joseph’s wife?
Castenmas · M
@Lionehaza But she was an unmarried woman, an act of blasphemy she could have been stoned to death for.

And don’t even get me started on “thou shalt not kill”.
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
@Castenmas
thou shalt not kill
exists no where in actual Bible; It's "thou shalt not murder", the Hebrew bible makes a clear distinction between kill and murder, modern translations do not
Castenmas · M
@wildbill83So god is a murder instead of a killer.

Besides, making Joseph a cuckold was okay?
Lionehaza · 31-35, M
was he 22 years old or 42 years old?
Lionehaza · 31-35, M
@SW-User
Jesus < God [jesus is less than God]
If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.Jhone 14:28
Lionehaza · 31-35, M
GOD means the greater one who has no body better or greater than so jesus was less than God so how come he is GOD.
Lionehaza · 31-35, M
With respect THE idea of trinity is not the sole own by christianity. There are various religions advocating such beliefs... in india the mother goddess had three head and one body...the idea that god descends in to the world as a human being is called anthropomorphism...I cant even find the word " trinity "in the bible...
SW-User
Bart D Erhman’s books are good on these issues.
He writes well.

Personally I don’t go along with all his views.
