I am pretty anthropologically oriented and used NIV because it's easy to get and has the translation notes everywhere.

The Geneva Bible is the predecessor to the King James Version, as I am sure you know.

I like reading it on occasion because the odd English and spelling that they used in the 16th Century is Extraordinary and a good break from the mundane of some bible reading ...just saying :)

@laurieluvsit I've read KJV, but never the Geneva Bible, which I am aware. The Separatists (Pilgrims) used this translation.

NRSV usually because I used the RSV for most of my life. I do check other versions sometimes, including the NET and the NIV. I've become lazy and often use Biblegateway to quickly compare differences.

@OverTheHill I have heard passages from that version. I try to avoid paraphrases, and try to stick to something that is close to a translation of the original Greek and Hebrew. I know a little Greek but no Hebrew.

I use the St. James version of the bible. However, I am very interested in finding out about modern day translations of the Hebrew Torah into English...because that is basically the Old Testament...and a serious and studious Greek to English translation of the New Testament...because the New Testament was written in Greek.

My daily use Bible is the RC Sproul Reformation Study Bible which is an ESV.

When I am away my Bible is a Trinitarian Bible Society one, which is a KJV.

What's "thought for thought"? It sounds like another term for "paraphrase.
ESV is what I find most suitable these days
