Bible Translations

Over the years I have read various translations of the Bible for my personal devotions.

This year I am using the NET Bible (New English Translation). This translation is somewhere between a formal equivalence (Word for Word) and a dynamic equivalence (Thought for Thought). The translation team made the translation notes readily available for anyone through their website: https://netbible.org.

What Bible translations do you use for your devotions or studies?

NRSV usually because I used the RSV for most of my life. I do check other versions sometimes, including the NET and the NIV. I've become lazy and often use Biblegateway to quickly compare differences.

@exexec Bible gateway is great. I've read through the NRSV as well.

@OverTheHill I use the lectionary at Vanderbilt for my daily readings, and it is NIV.

@exexec NIV (1984) is the translation that I have used primarily through the years. I appreciate the NLT for its simplicity in reading. I know many have enjoyed The Message, but it always came across as Eugene Peterson doing beatnik poetry.

@OverTheHill I have heard passages from that version. I try to avoid paraphrases, and try to stick to something that is close to a translation of the original Greek and Hebrew. I know a little Greek but no Hebrew.
