It’s an interesting thing, because despite the number of menfolk, who are dissatisfied with their marriage, men are also statistically more likely to remarry and remarry faster.
If I’m remembering correctly, though, the study you’re referring to identified that the women were happier single because they were exhausted and stressed out by the disproportionate responsibilities, whereas the menfolk typically benefit from/seek out women who will do the majority of the parenting, majority of the cleaning, majority of the cooking, often still work outside the home, majority of the emotional labor in the relationship, and be the man’s cheerleader/emotional support system as well since there’s a shortage of emotional support in male friendships.
However, ultimately couples who have good teamwork, healthy friendship, and put energy e into their romantic life are ‘happiest’ .

Other than that some studies measure dopamine and similar hormones along with cortisol baseline and fluctuation per individual. Neuro scans of people who have chronic depression and/or have been through trauma also look different than scans of those that don’t have that going on.
