Do you have a favorite painter/painting? Tell me all about them/it!!

I want to hear all of your favorites!

I love Leonid Afremov and I’ve been trying to find similar works, but I just havent had any luck. I did just stumble across Iris Scott and Anastasia Trusova tonight and I like them a lot, but I don’t love them like Afremov!! My favorites by him are Farewell to Anger and Under One Umbrella. I have them both hanging in my living room. I’ll attach Under One Umbrella here for your viewing pleasure…

I like works from Pablo Picasso's Blue Era. This one is called "The Old Guitarist"
@flowersindecember Oh my gosh, I completely forget he had ‘real’ paintings! I always think of his more wild, abstract stuff. Thank you for the reminder! He was such a talented individual. It’s bizarre seeing his art now and contrasting it to how it must’ve been viewed back then….he must have been so ‘out there’ and a ‘genius ahead of his time’ in those days. Now it’s all been there, done that lol.
Henri Rousseau. He was a naive artist in the same period of Picasso, and I enjoy the primitive nature of his works in both subject and style. I've done some work based on his style and it really takes things down to a refined yet unrefined character.
@BrewCityBarfly Aaah, I’ve never heard of him. I like it…sometimes there is a beauty in simple techniques and the simple life and I feel like this picture brings out the best of both of those.
@cherryxblossom Seeing them in person brings out a lot more than just online or in a book. I saw this one in Chicago (my photo) and another in NY.

Does woodblock art count, I love Utamaro, and his renditions of ladies of the evening, and Vincent van Gogh, Degas, Monet, and Seurat.
@Dv8rs All good choices. I always feel like a dud for not being a bigger fan of the classics. Especially Van Gogh and Monet, when you consider what they had to work with at the time. They were definitely ahead of their time. I’d love to see what Monet particularly would be able to create with today’s color options, tools, and available knowledge.

Such beautiful, and vivid colors...very nice.
@Dv8rs Isn’t it?! I love the life and passion….it’s just exciting and free. Realistic with just a touch of whimsy 😍

I love the paintings by John Martin. Just huge scope and depth.

JoeXP · 56-60, M
@MarsRedSky I always feel Martin was illustrating The Lord of the Rings before it was actually written!

MarsRedSky · 26-30, M
@JoeXP Totally. How amazing would an illustrated book by Martin be for LOTR.
@MarsRedSky Somehow I missed this comment! Unfortunately there are WAY too many details in this book lol. If I went to the end I’m sure it would make no sense 🤣 I haven’t had time to read lately, but I’ll get there. 😜

Margaret Keene. She paints the eyes huge in her paintings because she believes peoples eyes are the window to who they are. She was married to someone who tried to steal her art and he was very abusive- she won the court case by proving it was her finally who made every piece by painting against him in court. A badass and very talented. 🥰
@KittenSmitten0 I had to look her up after reading your comment the other night. I got interrupted and couldn’t reply at the time, but I have seen her art before. I had no idea of the ordeal her ex husband put her through. The audacity of some people is just astounding. I love that they worked it out in court…and I’m very curious to see what he had painted lol. I might have to google that lol. Oh, and yes, I do admire her style!!

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. The detail in this simple 'Basket of Fruit' painting is amazing.
@Idontdomornings Incredible detailing, indeed. Brilliantly done. Imagine if he’d had access to todays colors though! I don’t know what it is about still life art, but it instills an instant panic inside me 🤣 I feel stuck or something and I need to run away and go breathe.

Not a single painting or painter, but in general most modern art from the beginning of the 20th century up through roughly the 1960s or 1970s perhaps

Mainly Abstract Expressionism and its ancestors (some even going back into the 1800s, like Impressionism), a bit of Surrealism, Cubism, Suprematism, Kandinsky and more

Any paintings from the 1800s that were interesting to me were clearly incremental stepping stones to pure abstraction
@SW-User I am no art history expert and there is a lot here I’m going to have to look up! Lol I look forward to expanding my scope on a couple things you mentioned! I’ve never been a fan of abstract art. I still suppose I don’t like it much on a whole, but there are always exceptions! I’ve learned to never say never regarding any art form. You just never know what’s going to grip you and surprise you.

@cherryxblossom I just posted a random example of the kind of Surrealism I like, as it is more abstract ... but Surrealism is far from the only genre of modern painting I like
