Do you keep a jar of bacon fat on your counter?

I do. Most cooking starts with that.

That's a big no from me.

Ew no.

I grew up in the south where everyone did that, but I dont want everything I cook to taste like bacon. 🙄
Nah cause i dont eat bacon or animal fats .. But the 93 year old lady did
4meAndyou · F
My grandmother used to do that. She was a farm wife, and she would fry her chicken in that bacon fat, and use it as a base for her white chicken gravy with crispins.

@cherokeepatti You actually had to cook bacon...almost every day, too, and use it up before it went rancid. I can't even imagine what the insides of their arteries looked like. But my grandfather, who adored bacon, lived to 93.

@4meAndyou there’s been a change in how all of that is viewed. There is no proven correlation between ingestion of saturated fat and congestive heart disease. The worst fats are the ones that blow apart when heated.

@SW-User Well, I do think genetics play a role also. My grandfather chain smoked and had two kinds of cancer that were cured, and had a long life and still ate bacon and eggs every morning, wilted lettuce salad, and pie, pie, pie all the time. Lard crust.

I have a jar of bacon fat but I keep it in the fridge. We had left over mashed potatoes tonight so I will probably make patties out of them and fry them up with a little bacon fat. Cheers!

No, i just use bit of olive oil sometimes.
SW-User
@SW-User Yeah i don't think any fats are particularly good for you when they're heated but they taste nice though.
SW-User
@SW-User animal fats are more stable as is avocado oil
SW-User
@SW-User I probably should change, but i rarely use oil for anything, maybe just a teaspoon in some stir fried vegetables. Avocado oil is nice though. Animal fats though contain more carcinogens so i just avoid those.
Such a necessary staple. Ever put it on popcorn?
SW-User
@Quoththeraven I’m low carb so I don’t make popcorn; it sounds like a good idea though.
I do not, but growing up we did, it was an old coffee can.

We have ghee (clarified butter)
No, I tend to cook as low-cal and low-carb as I can manage. But my grandmothers used to. There was a running joke about every good Southern kitchen having a can or jar of bacon grease and one of fish grease—and woe to anyone who got them mixed up ! 😃
SW-User
My mom did, I don't

@SW-User 80% of serum cholesterol is produced by the body and needed by every cell. Diabetes is related to carbohydrates not fats.

@SW-User that was once the belief but it’s not backed up by research
Nah. I try to cook as low carb as possible.
SW-User
@latinbutterfly bacon fat has no carbs
@SW-User Didn't know that.

No. I cook with margarine.

@SW-User I'm slim. hbu?
SW-User
@Success same waist size as high school and I’m 50. All fats have the same number of calories but your kind breaks down into unfortunate things when heated.
