Is presentation important to you when it comes to food ?

For example, do you take presentation into consideration when cooking for someone or if someone were to cook for you?

I'm not particularly great at presentation but I recognize it's important. If something looks good, people will enjoy the meal more.

So if I go out to eat and there's been serious effort put into presentation I'll absolutely think highly of that.

And a key thing is presentation should look delicious. If it just looks ornamental the point has been missed.

@CountScrofula I went with a friend to a new restaurant in town, advertised as not fancy, but elegant. When my order of flank steak arrived, the chef, presumably, had sprinkled those hard little silver tooth-breaking ball besring cookie decorations around the steak and the leaf of Romaine it was wilting. Hmm...elegant, eh? The steak was good, though.

@Mamapolo2016 Yikes. Well glad it was a tasty flank steak, but that sounds like a failure on the garnishes.

@CountScrofula Yes. Who's designing the plates? The Beav?

I used to think a lot about presentation when I was making platters of appetizers for my singles group. I was the Hospitality Hostess. My shrimp and tomato appetizers were beautiful on the platter, and my watermelon and mango skewers were presented on a halved out round watermelon in a watermelon decorated bowl. Some of the people in my group used to call me Martha Stewart.

BUT showing off your skills for a group is different for me than cooking at home. When I am cooking for myself or for a friend, I worry more about flavors.
@4meAndyou that makes sense ! You seem like a wonderful cook

This made me think of preparing the family dinner for my siblings and Mom & relevant spouses, etc. My two older brothers, while arguably sophisticated in some ways, and certainly educated, were both single and lived like gnus with furniture. When I made the mashed potatoes I used a mixer and when I took it out of the bowl, the beaters accidentally made a wave-like pattern on top ending with the flourish of a Dairy Queen curl on top. My brothers were awestruck by my artistry.

As long as it doesn't look like gravel on a shingle, in a private kitchen, I don't judge presentation although I appreciate it. I do consider it when paying for a meal and when I cook I try to make it pretty.
@Mamapolo2016 Yeah, definitely when paying I think it should at least look appetizing 馃槄
Mamapolo2016F
@Stark I first prefer it BE appetizing. That's my bottom line. But if it also LOOKS appetizing, I am even more pleased.
It is to a point. I cook with love. So that is evident in how it tastes. I don't have fancy dishes. I do love when my son and his gf and my friends come over to eat. My silverware is nice. My dishes are simple. And the joy we experience while we chat and talk and laugh is what is the best about the presentation. I offer homecooked meals made with love. I offer lots of variety. And everyone always loves my home and my atmosphere. I treasure these times.
@Mamapolo2016 Everything shines at my meals. From faces to laughter to...everything. I so enjoy them. I once held a Christmas party for my family. My parents agreed to come. They never went to family parties. They stayed until mid-morning. LOL. It was so enjoyable. I will never forget that one. All the laughter. Thanks for making me smile at that shine, Mamap. Holidays are when I miss my parents most. Their memories shine...:)

It's usually very important. Though if it's just me and my brother(s), I may just throw some ground beef in some macaroni lol
Carver31-35, F
I don't usually try to make my dishes prettied up when I'm cooking for other people but at the same time, I try not to make it messy, either.
@Carver same.
@Jackaloftheazuresand I鈥檓 not surprised by your answer. 馃お馃構
DHggmu31-35, M
When cooking for someone I like to make it presentable, same for if they cook for me, but in general I just throw it on there.
@DHggmu makes sense 馃榿
ChipmunkErnie70-79, M
Not too much, no. Actually, I watch shows like CHOPPED and wonder at how they plate things in pretty piles.
@ChipmunkErnie 馃槅 especially when being on a timer!
ChipmunkErnie70-79, M
@Stark I'm old school -- if you;re giving me a meat, a veggie, and a starch or grain -- 1. Don't run it through the blender and call it by some fancy name, and 2. Don't put it all into one pile in the center of the plate for me to separate into it's constituent parts.

If I am cooking, yes, I make sure it looks nice.

If I am hungry, not even taste matters at that point.
@SW-User that happens to me when I鈥檓 starving 馃き馃槼 lol
SW-User
I just like to put food on the plate where it doesn't over lap the other food. Its good enough.
@SW-User a neat plate is good too 馃檪
Crazychick36-40, F
It doesn't really have to look as perfect as it does in magazines, but it helps.
@Crazychick I think so too
Yes, absolutely. Even when I cook for myself presentation is important.
abe18246-50, M
I like a neat appearance but if the garnishments become merely obstacles than no
jackson55M
Sure, even McDonalds makes an attempt.
My mum says you eat with your eyes first. I do.
@SoulKey I think most people do.
GJOFJ361-69, M
Absolutely. Presentation is very important
@GJOFJ3 I agree, I just see a lot of people posting homemade meals on Facebook all the time and it hardly ever look appetizing simply just because of how they display it.
Quicksilver8726-30, M
Occasion day, yes. But, normally just less.

marsbarF
I do more so when it comes to baking.
SW-User
I like it messy

Yes! I would make it extra special for someone else but wouldn't care if it were done for me or not, 馃構as long as it tastes good.馃嵅馃嵎馃嵃
I try to, definitely. If it doesn鈥檛 look appetizing, folks won鈥檛 want to eat it, no matter how delicious it may be. 馃槃
ChipmunkErnie70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard Just keep the stray hairs and bugs out of it and I'm fine. And the plates and silverware should be clean.
@bijouxbroussard lol, true.
@ChipmunkErnie Gawd, that鈥檚 the minimum folks should be able to expect. Yet alas, I鈥檝e been to a few restaurants that couldn鈥檛 manage it. 馃あ
JustNik51-55, F
I鈥檓 more likely to notice the plate than the food on it.
@JustNik 馃 interesting

No, better eat before you come over.

@MarmeeMarch I鈥檇 definitely expect it to be important to an extent for eating out since you鈥檙e paying for the meal but I鈥檓 talking about if someone were to make a homemade meal for you.
