dont you wish there was more of a community for atheists? [Spirituality & Religion]

I wish there were more groups or churches for atheists. I really love churches, how people have many grate events connect and help each other in churches i wish there was a church for atheists. I found a few groups that just discuss atheism, I went to them and is was just a christian there every time asking questions it wasnt a discussion more of an interview, all the things they said were boring, they were just debating the bible.

No. They'd be all dead. As long as you're alive you'll believe in a god and have faith in that god. When God first created mankind, he put in us the desire to seek Him out which is why we'll never be atheists. Thank God.

@newjaninev2
Yes indeed... apparently ‘the truth’ has him. To which I remarked that he most certainly had been had.
How can you be had by the Truth?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@GodSpeed63 Oh, wake up!

You’ve been had by the one who finds it the easiest to do.

You

Looks like you're the one that's been had. Evolution scientists have been lying to themselves and well as you. The Truth belongs to the one true God, Yahweh, and His Spirit of Truth dwells within me since I became born again. This is His promise to those who love Him and are willing to become His children of their own free will.

Atheists are, in general, free thinkers. Organising free thinkers is a little like herding cats.

Besides, as Pikachu pointed out, what is there to discuss? I have no gods. Oh, well, me too.

Have you been watching the Cricket World Cup? The Black Caps are doing well, don’t you think?
Not really. What's there to discuss with other atheists about atheism?

Oh you don't believe there's a god? Yeah me neither....so how bout them raptors? lol

Although i can certainly see the desire for such a community if you're living in a place where atheism is uncommon or met with distrust and rejection.

Not really I'm an atheist, atheism isn't a group like a religion is. It's just a lack of belief. If there were churches it might as well become like a religion.
@JammieDodgerHeart During the renaissance that did try to make temples of reason. Didn't go over well.
IHateMyLife0MeDie · 41-45, M
@canusernamebemyusername I searched for Temples of Reason and the only thing I came up with was an article in Wikipedia and that it was during the French Revolution. Do you have a source pointing to a Renaissance one?
@IHateMyLife0MeDie Sorry. You're right it was the French Revolution one. Got them mixed up. Lol

🤔

Why do atheists need churches?
This feels like a vegetarian creating better veggie meat 🤔

Hehe, if you have christians trying to figure or unfigure out "atheism" by using the bible. Why not ask them how real the bible is. There are quite a few historians that research the validity of the bible, and how it came to be. What stories are in there, and where they came from. The moment you can point out that the "bible" isn't a valid dataset, theology become what it actually is... a study of literature.

Go to youtube, and look up some intervieuws with: Francesca Stavrakopoulou. She will give you some more sources if you are intrested in researching the bible. You can also read Jack Miles book "God: A Biography" (which is actually a literature study of the character of God in the concept of the bible). Francesca is quite the intresting character, and has a way more subtle approach which I prefer more then Richard Dawkins. Her intervieuws in the series "the big questions" are also really nice. I actually can only advice people to watch every episode of that show that you can find, since it invites people from all believe systems and gives everyone the opportunity to express their believes without shouting. It's quite enlightening if you hear all the voices and try to figure out why they say what they say.

I've never visited them but there is the The Church of Satan.

This from Wikipedia
The church does not believe in the Devil, neither a Christian nor Islamic notion of Satan.[3] Peter H. Gilmore describes its members as "skeptical atheists", embracing the Hebrew root of the word "Satan" as "adversary". The church views Satan as a positive archetype who represents pride, individualism, and enlightenment, and as a symbol of defiance against the Abrahamic faiths which LaVey criticized for what he saw as the suppression of humanity's natural instincts.
LaVeyan satanism. Its founder is Anton Szandor LaVey.

@IHateMyLife0MeDie I can't remember which Satanist organization it is but one of them was fighting for women's reproductive rights.

I feel that way too. That's one thing churches get right is cultivating a sense of community and doing things to serve the community. I would love to see something like a church for atheists/agnostics, perhaps with sermons or discussion groups on philosophy, morality, skepticism, and critical thinking, and church-like events like potlucks and youth groups and volunteer and charity work.

@SatanBurger Homeless shelters revenue poor, homeless people. Those shelters provide a good income for the people who own them and their employees. They have a vested interest in keeping the poor in poverty
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@CookieLuvsBunny Wow good job on changing policies, I wish I had done that but I wasn't thinking about it because I was so mad at the time, I just felt powerless.

This homeless shelter also took your phone at night, I didn't trust it. I looked up the reviews later and there were a lot of people leaving reviews about their shady sermons and they also get paid by the Government.

When I looked it up later on Google, it turns out there's this huge problem with homeless shelters and exploitation like that. This is fairly common.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@CookieLuvsBunny Just like prisons have a vested interest as well, our society is very corrupt.
There are. A regular, bible-based, truth seeking church, welcomes everyone, without exception. Everyone on earth is in the same boat. We’re all sinners. Church is not for saints. That is, some who think they are above or better than others and have no sin. It’s for sinners. Those who recognize their need for Jesus and come for direction and love, not criticism. Those seem hard to find these days, as prophecy predicts that many, inside AND outside the church, shall harden their hearts against God and each other. That is end-time prophecy. However, there are still good churches left. You just have to find them. I wish you the best and hope you’ll find one you’ll feel happy in.
Not particularly, actually. But I do understand the desire for a feeling of community and togetherness.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Not particularly. I'm not interested in being part of a community defined by this. I'm an atheist, but it's far from the most important aspect of my life.

Actually there are some great organisations
@SW-User like what?
@Girlyfriendcollecting I know of humanist/secular humanist places. Also Unitarian-Universalists churches accept atheists.
IHateMyLife0MeDie · 41-45, M
Someone mentioned the Unitarian Universalist church before me. I'm not a member but from what I've observed they accept people from all walks of life, including many agnostics ands atheist. One of their churches near me was designed by the same architect of the WTO twin towers, a minimalist design I would say. They do different activities like book groups, meditation, movie nights, potlucks, charity, etc.

I think we have too many, and I don't believe they bring anything positive to the table...
GodSpeed63 · 61-69, M
@masterofyou You got that right.

Haven't heard from them for a long time👍️
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
As others have stated, atheism is simply a lack of belief in Gods. That's a bit too broad to bring a community together. In a way you can look to Christianity and how they have dozens of kinds of churches for differences they have despite believing in the same god.

Humanism is a good, non-God required, community group. Sadly not all areas have them but many do. I've often thought it would be great to start a community group for the faithless that was focused on bringing people together without religion. But I lack the energy to do so myself.
