Who’s the best guitarist ever?

Eric Clapton? Jimi Hendrix? Mark Knopfler? Or somebody else?
SW-User
I never thought I would say this, but lately I've been listening to Jeff Beck. Note for note , riff for riff, Clapton still strikes a chord with me, and Knofler has proven his chops more than once or twice. However, pound for pound, the most innovative of legendary guitarists , in my mind at least, has to be Jeff Beck. Well into his 70's, and still pushing the envelope, while many of his contemporaries have rested on their lurals instead. Resigning themselves to what they do best, but never venturing beyond that comfort zone. Jeff still shows promise, and it's not every aging rock star that can say that. For all we know, in spite of an extensively good catalogue of music backing him up, his best work just might still be to come.

@SW-User Interesting, well said, but I'd have to think about it.
SW-User
@SW-User with all the names being tossed around, I feel like adding a few more, like Duanne Allman, Rick Emmet, Roy Buchanan, Sonny Landreth, Tom Bresh,Pete Townsend, Liona fricken Boyd for crying out loud? Lol
Paddy42008 · 51-55, M
I would have to go with Hendrix but I don't think David Gilmour get the recognition he deserve.
SW-User
@Paddy42008 you can't go wrong with Jimi, but David is pretty awesome in his own right too. There no wrong answer, is there?
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Paddy42008 I also think David Gilmour should be mentioned in this list and I'm glad you did, David Gilmour is probably the best in the composition of melodious guitar solos and equal to Santana in emotion and effect.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
Kirk Hammett, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Santana, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Steve Howe, Mark knofler these are some of MY favorites but someone else might have a different opinion.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@SW-User I just think that at that level of mastery they are all amazing and its hard to say that one is THE best.
SW-User
@reflectingmonkey I couldn't agree more. It's fun to hear who people like though.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@SW-User man, I just came back from youtube to listen to a bit of Django Reinhart with a bunch of guys playing a piece called "dark eyes" and its surprising none of the had a heart attack playing that piece, its so intense.
SW-User
Stevie Ray Vaughan, Prince, Clapton, I can't decide.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@SW-User @Itsmrsockmonkey you totally should post something of yourself, that a great idea
@reflectingmonkey how do I post it?
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Itsmrsockmonkey I don't know, I'm not really good with computer/internet stuff
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
Could be Carlos Santana.
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
@PainfulTruth So, the question is living or dead, okay.

@nudistsueaz as I have said before, there is a point where many guitar players are "the best" and none of them can be said to be THE best amongst them. Certainly Santana is one of those, and I have also put him in my list and I totally respect if he is your favorite as at that level it comes down to personal preference in choosing between masters. To say that Stevie ray Vaughn is better than him is like saying that strawberry pie is better than apple pie because of a personal preference, its childish. Stevie ray Vaughn is fast and powerful but doesn't have the feeling of Santana and personally if I had to spend my life listening to one or the other I'd choose Santana, for the feeling. My ultimate favorite depends on how I feel that day, some days its jimi Hendrix, some days its jimmy Page, some days its mark Knopfler, sometimes Vaughn, sometimes Santana etc(see my list). But I would never say to someone who prefers one of them that they are wrong.
SW-User
@reflectingmonkey I posted it on here, maybe you saw that 🙃
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@SW-User OMG really? I also posted it a few months ago 😂!!! and I think nobody even responded.
SW-User
@reflectingmonkey I usually don't get many responses, but sometimes I do. People usually only view and comment on music they already know, and I try to post things I think others may not have heard. Post a Pink Floyd song everyone's heard a million times before and you'll get lots of comments; post something from Lumpy Gravy and you'll get none.

Eddie van Halen
SW-User
@vetguy1991 not always my favorite style, but undeniably one of the greatest of all time. Nobody can hammer on better than Eddie.

@PainfulTruth one of a kind, and in this case, one of a kind beats a full house. 😁
Chet Atkins could play any style, also liked Lenny Breau
SW-User
@Itsmrsockmonkey that's awesome. I knew exactly sho you were referring to when you said the swampers, just because of the song. That's some serious history bud.
@SW-User many famous people came to my grandpas bar. There's a lot more history in my family. And thanks man
SW-User
@Itsmrsockmonkey thank you...and your grandpa.

@SW-User if anyone travelled to the crossroads to make a pact with the devil, it was Page. 😉

@SW-User Good but not the one
SW-User
I don't think there's a good objective "best" once you get to the top tier, probably the best guitarist ever was an unknown session musician who died in obscurity.

In terms of my favourite, though, it has to be Jimi.
SW-User
@SW-User its nice to see Jimi still getting so much love, even after all these years.
SW-User
Stanley Jordan is the most skilled guitar player I’ve ever seen, but ultimately, it’s in the ear of the beholder as to who is best.
SW-User
@SW-User I think we all agree it's subjective, but it sure is great to hear what other people hear, and hear what they think about it. Jordan certainly is skilled, there's no question.
SW-User
I’ve posted this song before, but for my money, this is my absolute favorite guitar performance ever recorded in a studio. I think Robin Trower was absolute perfection on this track, and it’s pretty much a single take with no layers or studio gymnastics. He just plugged in and let it rip.

@SW-User
Ali Farka Touré, Robert Johnson, Skip James, Andrés Segovia.
SW-User
@LeopoldBloom now we ate getting down to the nitty gritty. Johnson used to hide his hands back in the day, whenever he played in public, so nobody could rip off his shit. Lol I think the cats long out of the bag though.
@SW-User Supposedly, when Keith Richards first heard a recording of Johnson, his reaction was "hey, he's pretty good. Who's the other guy playing with him?"

Ali Farka Touré also could sound like two people playing. He was also a politician, he served as mayor of Niafunké in northern Mali. I remember thinking, when al Qaeda invaded that area a few years ago, they wouldn't have tried that shit if Ali was still alive.
I don’t think there is such a thing as the best. It’s all subjective.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Gotta be Hendrix.
@Burnley123 Hendrix said Billy Gibbons
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Itsmrsockmonkey False modesty
Jimi Hendrix gets my vote overall.

But Les Claypool is best bass player.
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard nobody played with more feeling than Hendrix, that's for sure. Even his worst note sounded great on any given song on any given day.

Les I'm less familiar with. I have heard him play, but not enough to have a valid opinion. I will take your word for it.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@bijouxbroussard Finally someone who sees sense. 👍
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Slash
Chuck berry.
SW-User
@MrBrownstone Slash is surprisingly good. In the early days of GnR, he sounded so rough and unpolished (which I liked btw). Today, he really has come a million miles to be one of the best , and he's much more polished...and I like it.
SW-User
So difficult to say. For me three really stand out

Francisco Tarrega who really created the guitar as the modern classical instrument which kept it alive in the 20th century

Allan Holdsworth just best guitarist I've listened to

For rock Jeff Beck probably he's simply stunning
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Not even certain I could pick. I prefer studio guys that the public has never heard of, like Tim Pierce, who is on hundreds of hit albums and songs. But, when you add it all up, with studio innovation, songwriting, singing, and instrument mastery, I'll give it to Hendrix.
SW-User
@uncalled4 you coukd give it to a far worse recipient. Lol
SW-User
Zakk Wylde can't be beat- I can listen to his riff's alone all day....[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdS7i6xy7_w]
SW-User
@SW-User just for the sake of argument...Randy Rhodes?
SW-User
@SW-User He's epic and a legend..lovin his too...but Zakk just🤩. And he can rock the guitar behind is back.😌[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv3kwF88EJQ]
SW-User
@SW-User o.k lol . Just fyi, playing guitar behind your back or your head, while flashy, is just gimmick. Stevie Ray Vaughn even Said so once. Not to say Zack isn't all that. I'm sure he is every bit as good as you say.

Those are great ones, and there are many great ones for me Stave Howe, Al Dimeola or Jan Ackerman
