They don't really listen unless it is something entertaining or makes them feel superior and right somehow.

That passing discomfort in their facial features when you step into a situation which needs to get fixed. Requires collective responsibility and bit of sacrifice.

I now just abandon the conversation as soon as I see the cognitive dissonance taking shape. Before even finishing the sentence, I take one look and get the eff out. Specifically with people that have a behavioral pattern of avoidance and apathy. I don't want to pretend that you care while you pretend to listen.

A place I used to work at had a guard who would insist on talking to me during my lunch break. He was a nice enough guy but our conversations were boring and then I’d be stuck with ten minutes left on my break to eat my lunch. I’d constantly do my best to end the conversation quickly but it never worked.

I've cared, I mean really cared, just to have people shove it back in my face, or use me as some vent. So apathy does necessarily mean bad person really.
