If we had a four day working week that would be great or three 12 hour days allows for plenty of time off. I wouldn't want to work in factories otherwise but if they cleaned labor up and started caring more, they'd find me much more productive.

@Justafantasy @SatanBurger So that's just it - as with all jobs there's the good, the bad and the ugly....

@Justafantasy Unions are great as they assure protections and the law, not all factories have unions, in fact there's such thing as union busting. This is a common practice. Furthermore, the amount of factories that actually have unions are slim, at least where I am. In all the factories I worked, I think only two had actual unions, unions aren't a big thing in most factories.
I do support unions though or the idea of them for sure 😃
With that said, even though I support unions, I worked for a major supplier of appliances that had one union, one of the few anyways.
In that factory there was no break rooms and it was constantly 90 degrees. All of what I said before applied. It was so hot.
In fact that company was a little worse cos when it came to ten minute breaks, you could leave the line but it wasn't advisable so most of us just sat down next to our line as we didn't have time to really go anywhere. Right when that bell hit I remember thinking should I pee or should I sit???
Oh and we didn't have breakrooms either, it was just two small tables even though it was a huge factory the size of three football stadiums.
In fact, during orientation, the factory actually encouraged people not to apply to the union, saying that both union and non union members get treated the same. That's how they persuade people not to sign up for the unions.
Nobody also complained, including me.
People did make comments to the point where you would suspect that they had issues too. But if you were standing next to me, it's not like I'm gonna make conversation about it.
So just because no one discusses issues doesn't mean it's not there.

@SatanBurger Sounds like a long work day there...🙁 not a very nice employer at all...

Americans definitely want manufacturing jobs. But a large portion of the US manufacturing sector moved offshore years ago due to high corporate taxes and low cost labor. It wasn't that we didn't want the jobs; it was that the jobs were no longer available. If conditions are made favorable, offshore manufacturing will repatriate, and Americans will happily fill those jobs.

@fun4us2b a very good point. A close friend of mine is one of the few Americans remaining that has the knowledge to set up textile plants. He's in his 70s. It will take some time to get younger people up to speed.

@BizSuitStacy Stop giving govt freebies and require job training for work that is needed - the labor pool will flourish.

factories were the lifeblood of many small towns across America until NAFTA came along. There were furniture and textile factories everywhere, you had a guaranteed job straight out of school; one that paid well that you could have pride in.
AmericanAvenger · 56-60, M
@wildbill83 Is Trump trying to get that back? If so, do you think he is doing the right things?
calicuz · 56-60, M
Americans just want good paying jobs. We shouldn't, "need," factory jobs since the future is in technology, but unfortunately we, ARE, going to need those factory jobs with Tяump putting American workers out of work.

Yes!
I'm a press mechanic turned hotel breakfast bar attendant with no benefits.
Yes, I want my mechanic job back

Americans want decent paying jobs that offer good benefits...you know ones that offer a liveable wage ...so that most don't have to work 2 or more jobs just to make ends meet
fun4us2b · M
@pripyatamusementpark That is how it should be - so people can survive on a salary when they are willing actually work.
Punches · 46-50, F
That type of job does have benefits, like not having to deal with customers.
Depending on the factory, it could be an okay job or a miserable ones.

I would. It's better than working in customer service.

Having work in government contractors manufacturing and design companies my entire life all I'm going to say is this thread is full of nonsense. And most American factory workers tell those attempting to unionize to take a effing hike.

it's wild how most people who win the lottery end up going back to work, not because they need the money, but to feel useful and to contribute to something. i really think most of us just want to be part of something and be productive. sure, there's scammers who abuse social services but the majority really want to make something of ourselves.
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
Americans want to work where they're valued. If we're out of shape factory work isn't a good choice.
Factories have been in America since the late 1700s.
SomeMichGuy · M
It used to be a way for unskilled persons to make a decent living.
DDonde · 31-35, M
Americans DO work in factories
JamesBugman · 56-60, T
All this tRump nonsense will not make people work in factories. They will have robots for that, much cheaper and no need for holidays, medical leave, Christmas parties. Plus they can work 24/7.
fun4us2b · M
@JamesBugman But somebody has to press the buttons....usually...
JamesBugman · 56-60, T
@fun4us2b They will secretly hire some kid in Philippines to push the button remotely.

@Punches 🤷♂thats why the country is the way it is
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@GuyWithOpinions That's not the issue, morally, factories should be automated.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
@SatanBurger thats a separate issue and yes, at this day and age factories should be automated.
