When is Your Busy Season at Work?

I work in Medicare. October 1 means we can start talking about next year's plans. October 15 we can start writing applications. That means 9 weeks of mostly 12-hour days. It's like tax season for a tax preparer.

Do you have a busy season in your work? When does it hit?
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Summer time. I build houses and we work outside. It gets around -30C here so work gets a little slow. It really sucks having to shovel snow out of the house so you can put lines on the ground then chip all the ice off the walls so you can place them on the lines lol

@GuyWithOpinions Done that many times

Jan - May lol budgeting and fiscal year end
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@BittersweetPotato Lol no I didn't! Internal auditor or external? I'm a financial analyst to be precise.

Ahh quarterly auditor questions, fun!
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
@JimboSaturn I worked most of my career as an external auditor but now I work as an Internal auditor.. Yep you are right, budgeting etc is more of an analyst job than an accountant..
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@BittersweetPotato Wow cool, I had no idea.

Now it seems any time libs/socialists are in power in Washington, the economy tanks . Especially for businesses. My home state is very pro business, has no state income tax, and usually has sweet deals to offer businesses to relocate to Texas, and even more conveniently to the city I work in. My business is securing funding for and vetting potential borrowers outside of the banks and FDIC via a large investor group. Business is picking up ahead of the midterms as businesses anticipate a congressional shift back to the right.
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@TexChik I thought I remembered you saying that from before. Hmm. I'm interested how that relates to securing funding for and vetting potential borrowers. Not something I would normally place within the purview of an attorney. It sounds fascinating.

@ShadowSister A contract has to appease both state and federal laws, and be all encompassing. They are usually quite lengthy and requires a solid grasp of the law to execute since it is without any federal protections. Its a process where every step has to go perfectly or the deal ends being delayed.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@TexChik Very interesting...are there any particular industries for the borrowers?
I work in hi-tech. It's always busy season by us
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Anytime a politician sends jitters through the financial markets with their latest hairbrained and unbudgeted scheme for 'boosting' the economy (I work in economic forecasting). It is party conference season here in the UK, so I can look forward to a few sleepless ights this week 😴
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@SunshineGirl That sounds like a lot of work, but also pretty interesting!
Varies... Summer is rough for getting dressings on sores - yes, the sores aren't always obvious to the naked eye, so I do need pointers from time to time.

Winter is bad on years it snows because someone has to go out and get essentials in.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
I work in aviation in the helicopter industry, storms are a busy season when they happen, summer tourism is a busy season and every spring and fall when operators are either storing for the winter or returning to service in the spring.
exexec · 61-69, C
I'm retired now, but when I was working, the busiest times were when we were working on a major proposal for a contract. Late nights, seven days a week.
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@exexec Did you enjoy it?
exexec · 61-69, C
@ShadowSister I hated proposal times!
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@exexec Good thing you're retired now!
JustEd · 41-45, M
It use to hit in the summer but past few years the winter has hit harder
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@JustEd What industry?
JustEd · 41-45, M
@ShadowSister Construction related.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
The second and third week of every fiscal quarter.
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@Starcrossed Accounting?
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
@ShadowSister not quite, a sister department.
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@Starcrossed Cool. Do you like it?
We're flat out year round .. but worse near each quarter financial close. Corporate rat race.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
No, never did. Apart from the occasional few days overtime to deal with something genuinely unexpected I worked eight hours or fewer per day and five days a week for all my career.

Weeks of 12 hour days sounds like a combination of bad planning and exploitation.
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@ninalanyon It does sound that way, haha. But it's not. We have a limited window of time to sell Medicare plans based on government regulations. Outside of that time, my company basically pays to keep me employed so they have me during this time. I am not required to work quite this much OT, but they I have to do some.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@ShadowSister It's still bad planning, just at a higher level and outside the control of the company.
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@ninalanyon Well there isn't really any better alternative. If they let people choose plans all year long, the prices would skyrocket. Everyone would take the least expensive plan and just switch to the plans with better coverage when they needed it.
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
The winter months,then we pray for hail season
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@Eddiesolds Why is that?
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
@ShadowSister Hail.keeps us very busy. Summer time gets slow for us here.
October through May for me......
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@Threepio What industry?
@ShadowSister I own a business that manufactures adult collectables..... primarily focused on the hobby genre.
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@Threepio Very cool. Something similar to Sideshow collectibles?
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F

@BittersweetPotato What industry?
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I work in video games. Busy season is usually the last 3 to 5 months of the title we're working on. For my current one, we're starting that now.
ShadowSister · 46-50, F
@ViciDraco Good luck!
SW-User
