This week I’m training someone at work who’s struggling with grief and I’m lost for what to do for the best.

It’s one on one training. She came back last week from 2 weeks leave following her brothers sudden death and she clearly isn’t okay and needs more time. It’s a very time consuming process I’ve been set to train her - I don’t know whether to give her lots of information to try distract her from her grief or take it slow because she might not be coping well. I’d ask my supervisor for advice but she’s just buggered off to South Africa for 3 weeks.

What would you do?

Take it slow maybe? Or see how she is and go with your gut, it might be a good distraction for her. So sad 😞
@Fairydust Yeah. I just feel terrible for her. I don’t know all the details but people are saying it was a suicide.

If I was her boss I wouldn’t have her in work so soon. She needs time, and considering how good she is at her job she should be recognised as someone who needs support.

@ShellSeeker yeah I agree, that would be harder to deal with as well I think, bless her 😞
I would start slow and then maybe slowly pick up the pace and watch to see how she feels about it
@TeamSkullGrunt That was my first feeling. Personally I think it’s harsh to set her training right now. It could wait a week or two.

I think you’re going to have to talk to her and see what she prefers.
@WintaTheAngle I think you’re right.

Not that this will help but it sounds like she needs to leave her personal problems at home. Yes it sucks when we lose someone, but I think the real problem is she just doesn't want to be at work. She will probably continue to use that as an excuse
@CestManan No that isn’t helpful. Her brother has died under traumatic circumstances very recently. That isn’t going to park up when she wants it to.

Then you have 3 weeks to train her, break it down in small parts each day, leave an hour at the end of each day to ask her if there is a part you need to go over again for her.

Last 15 minutes is coffee alone to chat
