Sure. I once got into a mega nuclear argument with my manager, and I walked out. I went downtown, ran into a couple of friends. One of the friends common greeting at the time was "Shots?" And I said yes, damn right. The other friend was so amused by this — the idea of me actually drinking shots — that she walked us over to a bar and bought us all three rounds of shots (I don't remember what — something brown). I downed them, each one.
I eventually went back to the office, slightly buzzed, still mad, and went back to work. My manager never said anything to me about it. All things considered, I got away with a lot of crap at that job that I would have fired someone who worked for me if they had done it.

@DunningKruger I once worked at the kind of place employees did their drinking on the job. My first drink of whiskey was when the shop foreman came up to me one afternoon and said "there's a half gallon sitting in my truck, go get you a drink if you want to". The boss knew it went on and mostly looked the other way.

I've left work having notified someone and without waiting for approval because I knew I could do that and still be safe.

Never. If I do that I would get charged with abandonment and my license would be taken and I would go to jail
