An Asian co-worker made a racist comment

I find this so strange. I'm sure as an Asian person he has experienced racist himself. Can he not see how stupid it is just from that perspective? Very strange to me. And unfortunately it surprised me

Racism isn't defined by the race of the racist. Not even close. Some of the most racist people I know are minorities. I think it speaks to some people needing "the other" to blame. A terrible quality.
Ynotisay · M
@bijouxbroussard Sure. I remember that. I think it's a little different now but there's still a ton of colorism in the black community. But it's weird. Very dark skinned blacks are looked down on, lighter skinned blacks are held up but a lot still disapprove of interracial marriage. Sure am ready to move past all that. Not sure it's going to happen though. In other countries people, particularly Asian women, spend big money to have their skin lightened. It's crazy.

It’s a complicated dance, now— you’re black, but are you black enough ? The desirable thing was to be light-skinned because your parents were two light-skinned black people— not half black and half white.

@bijouxbroussard Yeah. Complicated is a good word for it.

This happens. Im indian. Im pretty pale skinned through winter. But spring i go pretty dark.
You should hear some of the things said from random family members when my skin does go darker
Pisses me off

Like, are you going to need a hug or something?
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@Iwillwait I just about fell off my chair

Was it a racist comment against Asians? 🤔
Ducky · 31-35, F
@SW-User Logically speaking, no. But it’s more socially acceptable for one to make racist jokes against their own race. I got an Okinawan co-worker who’s done it quite a bit himself.

@Ducky fyi, being around asians...i have seen a lot of inter-asian racism
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@Ducky no. I would have taken it as a joke
Unfortunately, having experienced racism personally doesn’t stop people from having racist attitudes of their own about other groups. One would think they’d know better, but it doesn’t necessarily follow. 🙁
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard exactly. Makes less sense to me
Lilymoon · F
Against who? Lol
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@Lilymoon not Asians
@Axeroberts it matters who. Like it or not, racism against one group is going to be very different from racism against another. "racism is racism" is quaint be unrealistic
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP i can't see how. it sounds ridiculous to me
LadyInBlack · 18-21, F
what was the comment being made?
I personally know people who have endured racism and hatred, and it made them even more racist toward the people who have hurt them. Racism isn't rational.
@LordShadowfire Being racist against those who hurt you at least has a certain logic. Not saying it’s good or productive, but it makes some sense.

But often I’ve seen members of minority groups who are racist against other minority groups, not the mainstream group that may’ve been racist against them.

In fact the dominant culture has used that tendency as a "divide & conquer" tactic to stay on top.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@LordShadowfire it certainly isn't rational. And it crosses all barriers. From educated to uneducated and rich to poor
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard jealousy plays a part. But it's usually because the person is generalizing
