An Asian co-worker made a racist comment

I find this so strange. I'm sure as an Asian person he has experienced racist himself. Can he not see how stupid it is just from that perspective? Very strange to me. And unfortunately it surprised me

Racism isn't defined by the race of the racist. Not even close. Some of the most racist people I know are minorities. I think it speaks to some people needing "the other" to blame. A terrible quality.

@Ynotisay yes. They forget to look in the mirror

@Axeroberts Which is why racism will never go away. People don't look at themselves that way. They look to blame the 'other.' That's why even darker skinned Africans are the subjects of racism by lighter skinned Africans. So nonsensical.

@Ynotisay you're so right
@Ynotisay Colorism. And it works both ways. When Vanessa Williams, who has two black parents first won that beauty pageant, there were black people trying to dismiss her win ("she’s not really black") which reportedly upset her quite a bit. Even now, I’ve seen people trying to call her "biracial". There’s nothing wrong with being biracial, but by this country’s guidelines, she isn’t.

@bijouxbroussard Sure. I remember that. I think it's a little different now but there's still a ton of colorism in the black community. But it's weird. Very dark skinned blacks are looked down on, lighter skinned blacks are held up but a lot still disapprove of interracial marriage. Sure am ready to move past all that. Not sure it's going to happen though. In other countries people, particularly Asian women, spend big money to have their skin lightened. It's crazy.

It’s a complicated dance, now— you’re black, but are you black enough ? The desirable thing was to be light-skinned because your parents were two light-skinned black people— not half black and half white.

@bijouxbroussard Yeah. Complicated is a good word for it.
