If someone lists you as a reference without asking you first, do you still provide the info requested?

Protocol almost demands that a person should ask permission to give someone as a reference.

They are almost pointless anyways. I never even call the people they put down when i look over the applications. They aren't going to put down someone who will say something bad anyway.

It's really rude not to ask. I'd suggest they ask someone else to be a referee.
