When I take a deep breath, it feels as if my lungs/ribcage are being pinched. Is this normal?

I've had this plant for months now, and there's a weird white thing growing out of it. Should I be worried?

My camera is really bad so I apologize but in the second picture (current day) there's a white flower thing growing out of one of the stems. When a plant grows, is it normal for something else to just grow out of it?
