When did carrying a pocket knife become controversial?

Mine isn’t even a particularly large or expensive one…very simple light frame with a flipper tab. Yet I use it to open a package or something and suddenly I get side eyed like a criminal 🤔🤦‍♂

I carry a German Army knife around with me. Basically a military grade Victorinox Swiss Army knife. Only became something I have to think about in the last few years because of some stabbings in my city.

What is scarier is there has been more machete attacks to the point that they are now illegal in public (not sure why they were not before).

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Thankfully it was just the cannabis dispensaries that saw that kind of uptick here…a drug that makes you way less prone to violence. Which is good, because gun sales also soared.
@Zaphod42 Sadly meth is the poison of choice here.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow oof, yeah, I’ve seen what kind of random violence that can cause. Nasty stuff.

I started first grade in 1962, small town school. The little farm boys would bring their shiny new pocket knives they got as a gift to show off at Show and Tell. The teacher would ask them what they were going to use them for…they’d say peeling apples, whittling wood, cutting string, etc. Not one of them said “I’m going to stab someone with it.”

This is how much society has changed since I was a child. Nowadays children would get suspended for carrying a pocketknife.

@cherokeepatti I just don’t understand violent people. Honestly I feel like people should just have a pocket knife…you never know when you’ll need one for whatever reason. Even my GF is surprised how handy it is that I simple carry one whenever I’m out. And it’s been habit to have one since my dad got me my first one when I was ten 🤷‍♂

I always have one of my 11" butterfly knives on me especially when walking the dog.

Yeah, it sucks

I’ve had two super small compact Swiss Army utility knives confiscated at TSA

@Kiesel I have lost Swiss Army knives. Feel you. Some airports once had shipping envelope dispenser machines with postage.

Oh?!?

I have carried a Swiss Army knife for half a century or more. Constantly lending it to open things or tinker with some broken gizmo....
RosaMarie · 46-50, F
Stop using it with your 3rd arm, that's what's getting people on Earth the shivers.
tenente · 36-40, M
NYPD question me often about my leatherman arc 🤷‍♂ we live in a society lol
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
@tenente Now that’s just crazy. I have a few leathermans…I keep one in the car console simply for its utility. My pocket knife is just a knife though…legal to carry by California standards.
tenente · 36-40, M
@Zaphod42 same, totally legal in NYC. most times it's because 'anonymous' tip i'm up to no good lol other times cops with god complex
