I don't think so. Reminds me of the LA fires. They didn't start themselves. These poor victims.

@LadyGrace In a railroad car there are factors that can cause a fire. A fire does not necessarily need a human factor involved. Certain materials when not handled properly have the potential
to self ignite like a pile of oily rags heaped in a pile , or certain elements that affected by water ( surprisingly) or atmospheric conditions can result in spontaneous fires occurring.
Not saying it wasn’t an arson ( intentionally set) but the investigation should have answers.

@soar2newhighs yeah we really can't jump to conclusions. It's just that we've got so many of these incidences happening lately.
@LadyGrace I found out two things in the fire service: 1. Be ready if there has been a long “ quiet” stretch 2. When the lull ends things will come in threes. I have experienced that .
Depends. Could be a defect in the car. Possibly electrical. Was it running under catenary or pulled/ pushed by a diesel locomotive? Something may have failed earlier that had the potential to suddenly break out into a fire. But did any passengers relate smelling smoke?
Fire investigators and SEPTA personnel and perhaps NTSB will figure it out.

Back in the old days when I lived near a railroad track, we would see rail cars with a "hot box" pass by, smoking really badly. The axle in one of the car's truck (wheel assembly) would overheat from friction and possible cause a fire. I doubt if that happens today.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
POSSIBLY, but I couldn't be certain, something to do with under-investment in the railway?
Thoughts must be with all those who were involved in this, and the emergency services who selflessly threw themselves into the rescue.

Electrical short most likely
The problem is todoy stuff is made with computers and electronics. They took out the mechanical part of stuff.
That computer and electronics stuff is nice but it has a major flaw. It gets real hot and needs fans and cooling to keep it from over heating.
A fan stops working and you have a fire in less then a minute.
I watch this happen with my desktop computer. Lucky for me I was home and was right next to computer when it happen.
