How Does A Train Spontaneously Catch Fire?

Back in the old days when I lived near a railroad track, we would see rail cars with a "hot box" pass by, smoking really badly. The axle in one of the car's truck (wheel assembly) would overheat from friction and possible cause a fire. I doubt if that happens today.
