Dual Sport Motorcycles

Does anyone else out there enjoy riding on AND off road? I have had many different motorcycles
up to about 40 years old. I then concentrated on building my company, now at 64 I finally got
back into riding, and decided on a dual sport, since I like both dirt and street. I'm already
looking at what I will get after this one. I'm still getting back my skills.

I haven't been off road in years on a bike, I raced motocross and gravel pits and trails, I never had any interest in a dual sport as they aren't real good at either, but Im talking about them 45 years ago so im sure there is improvement

@Musicman That's a nice array of bike. That KX125 was the king back then
fortycreek · M
@DogMan I had and 81 yz125 then bought a new 83 yz125 they were so fun
DogMan · 61-69, M
@fortycreek I never had a full blown motocrosser. The KDX 175, KDX220, and RMX250 were close.
they were 2 strokes with the same suspension. But they had a little heavier fly wheel. They had
better low end torque, but not the high rev horsepower. I rode a KX500 once, and it scared me.
Musicman · 61-69, M
In my younger days I even rode a little motocross. Like you I haven't had a dirt bike in 33 years. I would love to have another one. I hope you have a good time and enjoy. 😊
DogMan · 61-69, M
@Musicman Yes, I have lived in the desert since I got stationed at Nellis AFB in 1977.

I grew up in Iowa riding the woods. The desert is more dangerous because of the rocks
literally everywhere. lot's of sand too. That is why I like riding in southern Utah, it's
a blend of desert, mountains, and forests. You should check out the TW200, it would
be perfect for you, if you can find one. They have a cult following, a lot of TW clubs.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@DogMan Thanks. I will definitely look into them. I grew up in Virginia riding the trails in the woods.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@Musicman Man..that TT350 has got to be one of the best looking bikes ever. Even by todays
standards.
When I was younger, my first bike could have been considered dual sport. There were still places around to hit some trails and such. Not so much anymore. At any rate, I eventually sold that bike and went street. I would only look at a dual sport if I was living someplace like in the photo where going off road was more of an option.

Anyways, good for you getting back on.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@BrewCityBarfly The photo is southern Utah, around Cedar City. Great place for riding,
except in Winter
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
I grew up on those. We called them enduro's. They're fantastic!
DogMan · 61-69, M
@Nitedoc Hey Doc, I just bought another bike. New it was only 4,500.00
It's a Royal Enfield Himalayan. It's a heavy bike but has a low COG. I took it
offroad yesterday and it did surprisingly well. I'm selling my XT250, great
bike, but I will not ride it enough to keep it.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@DogMan Wow! That looks great ! It's so clean too.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@Nitedoc Not anymore. I took it offroad this weekend for the first time☺️
I have 150 miles on it so far.

Most of the dual sports made now you need a step ladder to get on. A fun trail bike to me is not 600 lb BMW GS.
jackson55 · M
@DogMan I built a Yamaha powered Cheney in the 80’s for a guy to race in AHRMA vintage racing.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@jackson55 What is a Cheney? Drag racer?
jackson55 · M
@DogMan No, it was a dirt bike. Eric Cheney was in the UK. Hand made frames from the 60’s and 70’s. Normally powered by BSA or Triumph engines. They were used for motocross.
Applepiedom · 56-60, M
They are ok. My thing is they aren't really great at either one. On or off. Tread wear, traction ,ride( smoothness ),ride (height). Weight capabilities. They really only fit best one place or the other. There is also the weight of the bike too
Applepiedom · 56-60, M
@DogMan yea? Navy 83, over a station wagon. Totaled both knees and bike and station wagon marine turned on red in front of me. Not one upping just military ,knees and wrecks
DogMan · 61-69, M
@Applepiedom Yeah, I was in the Air Force at the time, but we didn't have much of a hospital.

I was down in southern New Mexico at White Sands test range working on F-15's
Applepiedom · 56-60, M
@DogMan corpsmen, kadina airbase hospital for my accident
ChadJNSD · 31-35, M
That scene looks like central South Dakota, where I live. I am not a dirt bike rider though. Sounds like fun.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@ChadJNSD It's a lot harder going from street to dirt. But you can go to a lot of great
places off road.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
I'll stick with my Slingshot
DogMan · 61-69, M
@MarineBob A slingshot? Isn't that a high performance go cart?
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@DogMan but it fun
DogMan · 61-69, M
@MarineBob I'm sure ☺️

@Max312 The scrambler is cool too. Is that what they call a naked bike? I have been
hearing that, but I'm not sure what it is.

There a nice bike and wonderful place 🙂

Off roading on a motorcycle? .. that actually sounds pretty good. I’d be down for that experience, my Dad had many motorcycles … Yamaha… Suzuki … he stopped riding in his 40s bc of an accident he had working in the mining industry in SA.

Have fun off roading, age is just a number eh 😎
DogMan · 61-69, M
@Elanor Yes it is just a number, luckily I have stayed fit. Although I'm not as
light as my old riding days. It has brought back the fun that I missed, I love riding,
but life got in the way for a while.
