Near miss car accident

Wow, no idea where that vehicle came from.
This morning whilst pulling out of my driveway, after looking both ways, I very narrowly missed driving into the side of a large SUV.
Was not there when I looked left but I stopped less than a foot from the vehicle which just went on it's merry way at a speed well above a suburban road speed limit.
Would have been a great way to start the morning, exchanging insurance details, having to have my vehicle repaired...

Happened to me a couple weeks back, car pulled out onto a main road in the dark without looking and I had to swerve around them at 40mph last second.

@Mordechai Near misses are heart stopping.
Infamous607 · 51-55, M
Glad it went that way for you.
Amazing how quickly in an instant life can change drastically.
You got lucky. You need to be more careful

I guess you have a point. I suppose. I'm not sweating any of that.
I felt like writing what I wrote and that's why I did.
Easy.
Why do you feel the need to come and freak out over someone telling someone to be careful.
What's up with that? 😄

Oh, be careful btw.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@Infamous607 We can be as careful as anything and things still happen.
I am glad I was lucky this time.

Oh wow, in glad you guys are ok.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@Cigarguy Could have been disastrous.
If I was a few seconds earlier then he may well have rear ended me at speed.

I have what's known as 'cross-traffic' warning on my car which uses cameras to detect objects moving across your path. Best invention they ever made! If I don't voluntarily stop when the warning sounds, my car's brakes automatically go on until the collision hazard is gone. I strongly recommend that option on your next vehicle purchase!
Gusman · 61-69, M
@swirlie That would be very handy indeed.

@Gusman
I learned that the hard way about a year ago. I rented a VW Atlas SUV which has a similar system but it only sees things straight ahead of itself... it doesn't see things crossing your path from left to right until the object is directly in front of you.

Not all new vehicles have cross-track monitoring, though they advertise they have autonomous emergency braking system which is very misleading. Unless it specifically says "cross-track emergency braking" on the vehicle's tech stats, then it doesn't have it.
I was almost run over in the crosswalk. another day in California.

@whowasthatmaskedman So glad I never hit him.
Just a whole lot of hassles and inconvenience when accidents occur.

@ShenaniganFoodie All I can say is that he was going well above the speed limit.
He was 100 metres away inside 10 seconds. On a suburban street.
