Near miss car accident

Wow, no idea where that vehicle came from.
This morning whilst pulling out of my driveway, after looking both ways, I very narrowly missed driving into the side of a large SUV.
Was not there when I looked left but I stopped less than a foot from the vehicle which just went on it's merry way at a speed well above a suburban road speed limit.
Would have been a great way to start the morning, exchanging insurance details, having to have my vehicle repaired...

I have what's known as 'cross-traffic' warning on my car which uses cameras to detect objects moving across your path. Best invention they ever made! If I don't voluntarily stop when the warning sounds, my car's brakes automatically go on until the collision hazard is gone. I strongly recommend that option on your next vehicle purchase!

@swirlie That would be very handy indeed.

I learned that the hard way about a year ago. I rented a VW Atlas SUV which has a similar system but it only sees things straight ahead of itself... it doesn't see things crossing your path from left to right until the object is directly in front of you.

Not all new vehicles have cross-track monitoring, though they advertise they have autonomous emergency braking system which is very misleading. Unless it specifically says "cross-track emergency braking" on the vehicle's tech stats, then it doesn't have it.
