My first car was a Morris Marina hatchback. I didn't learn to drive until I was in my early 30s, so I was never a 'boy racer' but I did like a bit of speed. The first part of a new motorway was open between just two junctions which linked nothing of importance and very few people had a reason to use it. I decided to test this very heavy and already old-fashioned vehicle to see how fast it would go.

I chickened out at 100mph on the dial and have never been that fast since. If you want to drive between Jcts 4&5 on the M42 today, you will be lucky to get up to 40mph for much of the day as the road is so congested.

In a tractor trailer, 93mph. In a car, little over 110mph. The car was a 2005 Mini Cooper S.

130 in a Mercedes that I wasn't driving. 120 in a Dodge Dart that I was driving. 100 on a bike.

I've briefly touched nearly 80mph in a car, but not deliberately, probably when overtaking a clump of slower traffic in the inside and middle lanes* of a motorway.

I value my driving-licence and insurance - and my and others' lives - too much to wilfully break the speed limit, and have no wish to show off.

The limits are 70mph on motorways and dual-carriageways, 60mph otherwise on the ordinary roads outside of built-up areas, unless signed as lower.

* Some British drivers call the normal divisions of each carriageway on a motorway, the "slow, middle and fast" lanes; but wrongly. Properly, they are the "inside" (adjacent to the "hard shoulder" and verge), "middle" and "outside", lanes.

80 but it was scary enough because it was in an incoming lane when passing 😬
