Which would you choose?

I only have another week with a rental car to find a new , used car. I won't have transportation after that. Unfortunately all cars that are in my budget have about 110 k miles on it or more. The two I'm down to are a Chevy Malibu , but it had minor front and side damage. I'll ask what the repair was. And the other that is under 100k miles is a Chevy Cruze, but it was a rental. Both in very good condition.
I normally wouldn't choose a car with any prior damage, or a rental, but I'm in a time crunch. Which do you think would be the better choice?
A. Damage (past, minor) or B. Rental?

Mileage would be a factor for me. You really don't want anything over or even a little bit under 100,000 miles. It will nickel and dime you to death. I'm going to be praying for you that God will show you the car you should have. Frankly, I stay away from dealers. A car depreciates as soon as it's driven off the lot, and you're paying far beyond what you should just so they can make a profit and boy do they make a profit. I have found tremendous deals and cars that have lasted forever from previous owners selling their cars themselves. I just make sure I take it to a mechanic and have it checked all over before I buy it.

The rental. I've purchased a previous rental before, and it was a good car. I think the rental would be more reliable, since car rental agencies maintain their cars better.

@calicuz Ty Cali. I really wouldn't have chosen it as my first choice but it's in very good condition and I'll have a mechanic look at it too. Did you happen to have a mechanic look yours over? I'm glad some are saying a rental can be a good car.

@Coralmist

No, I'm old school, but I did buy it from a large local dealer with a high reputation for selling quality cars here in Kansas City. They have like 4 dealerships all over KC

You should ask your mechanic if he knows anyone selling a car. He might, plus he probably knows the history of the car and probably worked on it himself. That's what I did many, many times when looking for a daily driver.

What I really think? Both are poor long-term choices. Stay with the rental a little longer and find something else. Seriously. You have zero idea how the rental was treated and it was likely poor, and you also have no idea what really was damaged on the other car. Either of them are potential money pits, no matter how good the deal is.

@uncalled4 Well id have it looked by my trusted mechanic...he's really good. I'll keep searching tonight too

@Coralmist every one has an opinion and every one had bad cars-go to the rental company and ask them for maitence records then u know
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Coralmist If you have a dialogue with a good mechanic, that's worth its weight in gold.

I'd probably go with the rental. Rental companies usually maintain their cars pretty well and many times sell off some of their cars to make room for newer models.

Id lean toward rental no damage fewer miles. Which is newer? In my experience cars were made more cheaply the newer they are. Also consider gas milage and parkability
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@exchrist The rental has roughly 10k more miles than the car that had past damage. The rental is two years newer though.

@Coralmist id probably go with the rental. It likely had better maintenance\upkeep

I’ve never worried about mileage I think ild choose the Malibu honestly just to avoid the rental
Lilnonames · F
rental cars are well maintained and they usually sell them once damaged,if not hit real hard it b a great car,my lil honda was totaled three times and it may not look good but id drive it anywhere

How easy is it to get a hold of your mechanic to have these conversations? If you trust him, go with his opinion
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@deadgerbil I'm getting an idea of "which" one I like most and which to have him inspect. I inquire all over. And enjoy many opinions.

Dont take this personally. But neither of those cars are good enough to be exported to my country. Keep looking..😷

Doesn't matter about a car being or looking cool, if it's going to nickel and dime us to death. 🤭
That Malibu isn't from some guy in Lakewood, Ohio, named Jeffrey, is it? If it is, don't buy it.

@geoam1 But, it 'may' have structural damage. I hope they'd be honest. It says on Carfax that the Malibu has minor front and side previous damage. Fingers crossed it was repaired well.

Never buy a car that's had damage repairs done to it or else that legacy will hang over that vehicle's history and dog you for as long as you own it.
