I remember when I was first learning how to drive, my mom insisted that I learn how to drive a stick shift

Around the time when they were very quickly becoming obsolete! I never really got the hang of it, but she insisted that I learn how to drive a stick because she believed it would be good for me to know for when I have to drive one later in life. In retrospect, that was incredibly frustrating because I don't think she understood just how obsolete they would be. It's been years since I first learned how to drive and what do you know: I have never been in a situation where knowing how to drive a stick shift would have come in handy. Looking back on it, that was more annoying than those old folks who dismiss improvements on outdated equipment as "idiot-proofing" them, lol.

Like your mom I think it’s important to learn stick because you never know when you’ll need it in an emergency

@Ducky I’m half Portuguese. I contemplated saying that but I just thought it was too much to type lol

You don't plan to drive in Europe then... 😅 Jk, you can drive automatic but if you live here, it's still more advantageous to learn a stick shift.

@CrazyMusicLover You're in Europe? All this time, I thought you were American, lol. Hope that doesn't offend. 🫣

I learned on a stick shift because that was what we had. My wife learned to drive in a 1932 Model A Ford. I have owned stick shifts and required my kids to learn how to drive one, as well as to change tires and do routine maintenance. Our daughter drives a Jeep and her husband has an old Mustang, so stick shifts still live.

I used to drive stick shift cars and trucks all the time, but once you reach a certain age and with traffic getting more horrendous, "clutch knee" (it's similar to tennis elbow,) sets in. I am happy with an automatic now.

I miss my stickshift car so much. I had it for 25 years, never had to replace the clutch.

There's a level of attractiveness when women drive stick shifts, in my opinion.

I learned how to drive stick on a Suburu as a teen and I loathed it.
