I remember when I was first learning how to drive, my mom insisted that I learn how to drive a stick shift

Around the time when they were very quickly becoming obsolete! I never really got the hang of it, but she insisted that I learn how to drive a stick because she believed it would be good for me to know for when I have to drive one later in life. In retrospect, that was incredibly frustrating because I don't think she understood just how obsolete they would be. It's been years since I first learned how to drive and what do you know: I have never been in a situation where knowing how to drive a stick shift would have come in handy. Looking back on it, that was more annoying than those old folks who dismiss improvements on outdated equipment as "idiot-proofing" them, lol.

I learned on a stick shift because that was what we had. My wife learned to drive in a 1932 Model A Ford. I have owned stick shifts and required my kids to learn how to drive one, as well as to change tires and do routine maintenance. Our daughter drives a Jeep and her husband has an old Mustang, so stick shifts still live.
