I usually go by the oil life sensor, in general newer cars on full synthetic can go 7,500 safely between oils changes

Matt85 · 36-40, M
I let them do it when they service my car. I was having problems with my car the other day...First thing the dude checked was my oil...But it was fine.
Lots of pros and cons to oil and types of oil. if you look on the back of a quarter oil, there’s all these numbers and letters that represent all types of different things. I nowadays it doesn’t matter what the crude is or where it came from more importantly, it’s what the chemists do in the lab do to the oil adding different types of new synthetically engineered lubricants. I’ve always looked at it this way. Every 3000 miles is the best interval. Basically winter spring summer fall. now because of the increase in save the Earth green piece type, they put pressure on the manufacture to up the interval because they want to know where all this used oil is going professionally most of it is being recycled, so they went to the chemist to improve oil that’s how synthetic was born synthetic oil has its pros and cons. Yes it’s a good lubricant higher flashpoint doesn’t readily mix with water but if you have that problem it’s not oil related however, the FAA does not allow synthetic oil and piston operated airplanes. The oil synthetic that is has another feature dirt doesn’t stick to it , a lot of people change the oil synthetic and say it’s still clean so where does the dirt go it stays in the engine I have experimented using paraffin oil for 500 miles after and it comes out dirty most important thing is that you change oil and should never exceed the manufactures recommendation I could go more in depth, but I won’t …… happy motoring!

I would check the oil myself after getting it changed to make sure that they didn't lie
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@deadgerbil how do I do that? Put the dip stick in and see if it looks clean?
twiigss · M
When I was doing my own oil changes I would follow the general rule of thumb: change oil once every 3 months or every 3000 miles.

The garage we've been going to for the last 20+ years schedules mine for every 3000, but the car is a 2000, and I know with older cars you do oil changes more often.
twiigss · M
@olderuncle944 I'm usually over on the oil change mileage. So for example my next oil change is to be at 161k, but I'll probably end up going to 161700 or 162300 before I get it changed.

Trip meter A I have set for tracking my mileage between oil changes, right now it's at something like 1,880 miles since last oil change. And I think I was at 4,000 something miles before I had my last oil change. But yeah I've heard at least with newer cars you can change the oil at more mileage.
olderuncle944 · 70-79, M
@twiigss yes you can with full synthetic oil
twiigss · M
@olderuncle944 yeah my car is just standard oil
Jeephikelove · 46-50, F
I also use synthetic in my Jeep and change it around 10,000 kms (7000 miles)
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
TrunkZ · 56-60, M
Once a year. Don't put too many miles on my car
meggie · F
Once a year when the car gets serviced.
FrozenWasteland · 61-69, M
Between 6000 and 9000 km, depending on season and driving. More frequently in winter, especially if there's a lot of short trips where the engine doesn't get good and hot, less frequently if it's mostly highway driving in the summer.
BEENOV · 51-55, M
@FrozenWasteland synthetic @7k, winter and very hot weather is hard on an engine and the older they get the more care they require. Personally avoid Penzoil it is low quality Valvoline is a good quality oil at a reasonable price
BEENOV · 51-55, M
Start using a synthetic blend oil, depending on a couple of factors, like city stop start driving or highway driving also plays into how often you should change your oil, hwy every 10k city every 7k. BTW what car do you own
twiigss · M
@BEENOV 2000 Toyota Camry XLE V6

We've found that these cars are very reliable when everything works right.

My last Camry, a 97, had 255k on it, but I sold it cause I'd gotten the V6 and wasn't really driving it anymore.
BEENOV · 51-55, M
@twiigss excellent choice
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
Never car, when the oil is gone, because I hate newer junk. I rather put a hole in the oil pan then fix the garbage

Now an old car 1984 and older, when the oil turns black
exexec · 61-69, C
I wash my truck and change the oil twice a year. My wife's Traverse has oil changes as prescribed by the owner's manual and gets washed much more often.
olderuncle944 · 70-79, M
when your close to an oil change do an oil analysis on it you send a sample to a lab and they can tell if its time to change and also if there a problem in the engine .
Hatt94 · 56-60, M
Depends on vehicle.
I have 2 Diesels, 10,000 km.
My bike, once a year.
Gas engines, every 5000 km.
BOREDAFPA · 41-45, M
Every 5k miles if conventional oil. You can push it to every 8k if synthetic
MarineBob · 56-60, M
If you have a warranty it'll be voided after the recommended interval
1490wayb · 56-60, M
good idea to change oil AND rotate tires at same time
Byron8by7 · M
Every 5000 miles, with 0w-20 synthetic, per my service advisor
I run full synthetic in all our vehicles .. every 6k miles or so
RedBaron · M
Never, since I don’t own a car. What a pleasure.
MissingLink · 51-55, M
I wait until it says 15% oil life left
Fluffybull · F
5,000 miles??? Wtf are you driving?! 🤣😂😍😂
Musicman · 61-69, M
Every 5000 miles.
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
every 6 thousand miles
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Changing the oil when it needs to be changed makes your car last longer, full stop. I got 251k out of my 2010 Honda Accord(before I traded it in), and I'm still running my 97 Acura. Neither engine has been apart, ever.

If you drive home after a change, pull the dipstick, and it's not a clear, golden color, they have absolutely messed with you.
twiigss · M
@uncalled4 this guy is extremely reputable and honest, he gets so much business that you have to schedule a month ahead of time.

Hell while I was in the waiting room, people have come in for repairs or the yearly inspection, and have told him how the last place they were at ripped them off and how much they like this guy.

But yeah I know what you mean. Used to take my car to jiffy lube, that place WILL rip you off and be proud of it.
caesar7 · 61-69, M
I change mine twice a year....and undercoat the vehicles in the fall
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
I get it done when the sticker tells me too
Hanginginthere · 31-35, M
my car can go between 5000-7500 miles
Simple, check the oil yourself after you take it in for a change.
