Would you buy a rental car?

There's a 2018 Chevy Malibu for a GREAT price and just 70k miles. But, it was a rental. Would you consider it?

It's a toss up when considering a rental car that is for sale. I'd personally not buy one..... I rented cars that were trashed out and some were even with body damage and mismatched paint from accidents. I'd stay away unless it has a very good history and take it to a private mechanic for inspection! WIth that all said...... beware.

I have owned an ex rental and had no trouble with it.Of course, the company maintained the car with a full service history and was a large operation. Modern cars really dont need to be "run in" like they used to. Manufacturing tolerances are much finer. They do however need to me maintained and avoid outright abuse.. So there is that factor to observe...😷

Once purchased a car that was a rental and it was a great car.

But I wouldn’t recommend a Malibu at all. It’s not a reliable model.

@acupaday no more American cars for me. I stick with the Tojos - it stays out of the shop

I bought a rental car - it's been great. Most likely the miles were all highway, low stress miles

I bought a rental car once it was good. They are very well-maintained.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Jonjdw oh good...how long did it last?
Jonjdw · 51-55, M
@Coralmist had it for years not sure how long. Very few problems with it. It was a 2008 HHR.
after a proper test drive and i would have my mechanic run diagnostics on it to make sure it was okay.

I would consider buying a rental

Fun fact: I was an engineering intern for Cummins auto division back in 2005. We would rent the newest model of car from Hertz or Enterprise, bring it back to our factory, tear it down and take copies of the parts and assemblies. Then we'd put the car back together and return it. They never asked us what we were doing, and we didn't tell them.

No, I would never buy a rental or fleet car.

@tenente how long did it take to tear a car down
tenente · 100+, M
@deadgerbil my intern project was window regulators and airbags so it's only a couple of hours work. there were teams of engineers who would tear down and rebuild SUVs in less than 3 days over 2 shifts

Id ask why its for sale but yeah id look into it
@GuyWithOpinions Stock rotation
No .. I'd not buy a former rental
@BrandNewMan Why? They're meticulously maintained.
@NativePortlander1970 Traveled 20-50% or more of my work time for many years ... I've seen how too many rentals are treated. Many are well maintained .. but have rented several with issues, some I had to return for a different car. To each his own.

@WillaKissing Ty!🌼

I would not, no.

Look up the 2018 malibu problems on google.
It's probably been thrashed for half those miles...
Rentals are meticulously maintained with extensive records, I would.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@NativePortlander1970 Yes true, plus I bet most who use a rental , are going to another state .. or a longer trip, so maybe it has more higher miles, which is good.
@Coralmist Most rental companies have strict rules to stay in the area, so more lower mileage.
@NativePortlander1970 Not really true
