Definition of Liberal

a. Favoring reform, open to new ideas, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; not bound by traditional thinking; broad-minded. See Synonyms at broad-minded.
b. Of, relating to, or characteristic of liberalism.
c. Liberal Of, designating, or characteristic of a political party founded on or associated with principles of social and political liberalism, especially in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States.

So how is it the liberals are constraining free thought? I would have posted this in reference to original post, except yet another name caller has blocked me. Ah, civility.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Well classic liberals do not favor reform. That is the big difference between them and progressives. What we now call liberals are actually progressives on steroids and progressives are nothing if not control freaks that demand everyone agree with their point of view.

@Oberon1
I believe Portlander is a classic liberal. He is not an adversary, in my opinion. I completely respect his view.
For your sake, I won't beleaguer the point.

I will point out that when republicans split ideologically, we called the traitors Rhino's. So, I understand that political ideologies change. I'm a little frustrated with all the nuances in the leftists evolution. Too many definitions to keep track of IMO.

@Oberon1 Thank you, I am a child of the 70's, came of age in the 80's, I remember when the dem party refused corporate and wall street donors, and actually penalized them. Then the neolibs rose in power during the early 90's, Bill Clinton getting away with the accusations in '92, that's when I knew the dem party was fucked, and the first time I voted third party. I voted for Perot in memory of my lifelong dem Grandfather, who admired Ross, my Grandfather died 2 1/2 months before the general election in November 1992.

There are very few liberals in the USA today. These people hijacking the name, "liberal" are much closer to fascists than liberals. Ronald Reagan was right.
‘If Fascism Ever Comes to America, It Will Come in the Name of Liberalism’
Ronald was right about a lot of things. Some of his speeches were down right prophetic.

It's really quite simple. They're conning you:

b. A person who pretends to be what he is not.

c. A person who practices hypocrisy, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.

In Soviet Mother Russia you do not hug Communist Bear, Communist Bear hug you.
DCarey · 46-50, M
Ok, let's call "liberals" what they are-- fascists. They certainly don't fit any of the dictionary definitions.
@DCarey You're so brainwashed it's not even funny. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.today.com/today/amp/tdna191527

@NativePortlander1970 "You're so brainwashed" says the brainwashed. 🤣

One of the big differences between a liberal and a progressive is that a liberal does not oppose change. change is good when needed. A progressive believes that all change is good and therefore must bring about change for the sake of change being good. A liberal looks back at a long line of historical events and chooses his way forward carefully. A progressive's history begins when he wakes up each morning. A liberal recognizes that humanity is flawed and must be carefully monitored lest its worst aspects manifest itself. Progressives believe that humanity is what you make it. A liberal knows that humanity is not perfectible. A progressive believes that humans must be perfected. The conundrum the progressives can never address is where did the present failure of mankind come from and how is the deeply flawed going to bring about flawlessness. Two horns of the dilemma that can never be addressed by the progressives in our midst. Thus we see the progressives trying to bring about socialism/communism which they see as the perfection of mankind even though socialism/communism has failed and failed miserably every time it has been tried. The progressive logic is always "it failed because it was not done correctly all those other times." Kind of funny but such a sad condition for humanity to be under the sway of progressives. Those guys will kill you.

@cherokeepatti

Now, now, Patti...
We're in good hands with progressive liberals in power.

carpediem · 61-69, M
LOL.

And Obamacare was referred to as "The Affordable Care Act". Yet it's certainly nothing close to affordable.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@carpediem Spent 40 years in the health care field, how about you? Cheap insurers, particularly those out of Texas, offer you everything until it comes time to pay out. Then you find it was pre-existing conditions, or not a covered benefit, or Mother May I and mother says no.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@dancingtongue I spent 30 years in business. BCBS wasn't some cheap insurance. You don't have a clue.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@carpediem Hey, you might have a good deal. Without knowing the particulars, you might be right in your situation. But in broad general terms, those cheap insurance plans were and are rip offs that never pay out anything significant. All the political cries for just allowing these Texas and other unregulated state insurers to be offered nationwide was asking to give a blank check to the con men.

It’s curious to read the responses to this post. Curious that the open question was downvoted too.

I’d say by European standards I’m Conservative, but in America I’d probably considered a moderate. I lean towards Conservative policies but I don’t vote for the same party every election if I don’t agree they have the best policies or the right people aren’t placed in certain positions. Which is fine - it’s a political party, not a sports team.

I suppose this post is challenging to answer because there’s creative policies but also extremism at both points of the spectrum.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@WintaTheAngle Yours was a great answer.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@carpediem Oh. Thank you.

That's why I call these thugs, "pseudo liberals, pseudo progressives, and pseudo democrats. These maggots are more fascist than anything else.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
Liberals aren't like that anymore. Now they are the ones limiting Free Speech.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@HoraceGreenley But it is not just me you are trying to convince.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@OogieBoogie I'm on my phone taking a crap. I only use gifs when I'm on my PC, as gifs are a pain to post with a phone.

Besides, this guy does not deserve my undivided attention.

Ironically my crap is a metaphor for his comments.
@HoraceGreenley HAHAHAHAH

I'm never gonna ask, agsin... Thr visuals are disturbing 🤣
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
It certainly wasn't me. Perhaps it was the other on that one post yet I wasn't blocked by him.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@DeWayfarer No. Not you and on a totally different thread. Your request was civil and reasonable.
iamelijah · 26-30, M
At these days, liberal word has different meaning depending the narrative.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@iamelijah And the person throwing out the label with no definition of what they mean.
iamelijah · 26-30, M
@dancingtongue Unfortunately, that is true. We always wanted to be free, the thing is are we truly free?
Because we are still have rules to obey.
We can't travel without passport, money, etc.

When it comes about people, we need a leader to lead us a better life, well at least a functional organisation.

Unless you live in jungle, you live on your own. Now, that is truly free.
Dshhh · M
words mean things.. I know that is not a popular idea
