I hope you're having a better day than I am

I'm driving along and all of a sudden my car starts making a squealing noise followed by the red battery light coming on the dashboard. Luckily I was three blocks from a service station, so I pulled in and talked to the mechanic. He said it's not safe to drive the car with the red light on and the noise but he wont be able to get to it today. He took my phone number and said he would call when he knows what's wrong. My brother in law picked me up and took me home. So now I'll be without a car for who knows how long and who knows how much this will cost. Aaaaargh! 😫

Update: I just spoke to someone who knows people who had work done by this guy. They were very happy with the job he did.

Too bad. Cars are such a sinkhole for money. I hope they find the problem quickly and fix it once and for all for you, so you don't have to keep going back to fix the fix.

@Elizabeth28 That's exactly what happened to me. It was 20+ years ago. Lesson learned.
@SW-User when i get a car will not buy at dealer and fix me self

@Elizabeth28 If you can fix your own cars, that's really smart.

I hope they let you know soon and that it's not a super high fee. The good thing is that you were so close to a station. I always fear getting stuck miles away.
That sounds SO familiar. I think these service people have a scripted print-out ready for unwary, gullible travelers.
@Elizabeth28 Easy enough since I use YouTube daily. Thanks hon.
@Grateful4you 53 year experience and he tell truth
@Elizabeth28 Truth, a rare ethic these days.

Hope things get better for you.
hoping things turn out for you.

Did he look at the car at all before telling you it wasn't safe to drive? Do you know this mechanic? Are there other shops nearby that may not be so busy?
chuck7882 · 61-69, M
@TrunkZ yes he checked the alternator with a hand held device and siad it wwas bad. I looked this guy up online and he gets great reviews
TrunkZ · 61-69, M
@chuck7882 OK. Fair enough. Sounded a bit convenient, especially if he hadn't checked the car out.
Riverman2 · 61-69, M
@Thevy29 Holy crap! how did that persons outline get there?
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@Riverman2 Must have been standing close to the wall when it happened. 🤣
Bubbles · 36-40, F
ugh jeez I'm sorry to hear that Chuck
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
I had something similar happen, but it wasn't the alt. It was the harmonic balance. Make sure the bearings didn't seize up on that because it's too easy to assume it's the alt.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Elizabeth28 That, too. at least he didn't have to deal with a tow!
@uncalled4 ya but mechaninc is being slow af
chuck7882 · 61-69, M
@uncalled4 this guy seems very popular and they say thats a good sign
FurryFace · 61-69, M
yep that would suck , i walk around every day , wishing i had a Car
