In your opinion, do people really have free will? Is it simply an illusion?

CestManan · 46-50, F
Maeve19 one thing I would say to people your age -
Yes the world is going to try to influence you to live a certain way.
What one should do is avoid situations that you cannot easily get out of.
Examples -
Don't get married nor have kids til later, do not get hooked on drugs, booze, or even nicotine. Do not get in trouble with the law. Do not join the military. Do not get into debt if you do not have to...

When one DOES get into those situations, the world treats you like a dumbass, like you should have known better (even though you do not).
But here is the worst part - the world pushes for people to make poor choices, especially when you are young. By the time you get older (some point after 30) and one's life is a wreck, finally the world lays off, figuring you know better by now.

Does any of this make sense?

Free will exists, most have relinquished it to authoritarians such as doctor's and the government.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@curiosi Mainly to churches though!
Adstar · 56-60, M
@curiosi Then they made the free willed decision to submit to authoritarians.. They still have free will..
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
I have free will, as long as I am ready to accept the consequences of my actions. I believe in God but I don't think he has every action written in stone for me to fulfill in my life. I don't think every person has a purpose in life, there are things that need to be done and if I don't do it, someone else will. I can cheat on my wife, I can drink till I puke and then drive home if I choose. But the consequences if I get pulled over or if my wife catches me are the results of my free will. Poor choices lead to a loss of free will.
CestManan · 46-50, F
Religion says we have free will but then any little sin and you are going to hell. Christians dismiss this as, "Yep, you send yourself to hell, god is just giving you what you want".

But THAT aside, I know when you are young the world is telling you to go back to school get married have kids, join the military, do whatever. But after 18, life is YOURS to live as you see fit, you have to decide for yourself what you need and want, don't let others tell you how to live.

@CestManan
The question was in a way geared towards or at least in relation to the dilemma of determinism. Maybe I should have been more clear about that
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Maeve19 IN a way you do have free will but as you know, the world is going to try like hell to dictate your actions and thoughts.

Of course either way you are screwed. Look at this example - they push consumerism very hard but then people are shamed for being hoarders or you get punished when you rack up more credit than what you can ever pay off.

Or relationships - the idea of "being in love" is shoved down our throats from about the age of four or five but then when we get old enough to have be in love, our friends and family never like the people we get involved with.

So about the only "free will" we have is getting to decide which punishment(s) we want.
MeowsoliniReturns · 51-55, F
Yes, they do. But then, I am an atheist.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@MeowsoliniReturns We should now say "LMFMO"! Ok?
MeowsoliniReturns · 51-55, F
@Harriet03 Deal
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@MeowsoliniReturns I didn't realise you were aware of it!
Yes, we have free will.
We're so free, we can even choose bondage.

Vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
Adstar · 56-60, M
People have free will but many don't understand exactly what it is..

Free will does not mean you can make a choice without having to deal with consequences..

Free will is simply the ability to make ones own decision regardless of the consequences..
SW-User
I sorta see it as a catch 22 thing, you have it if you don't say you have it, and you don't have it if you say you have it.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@SW-User Of course if someone is in the shackles of marriage, there is no free ANYthing.
SW-User
@CestManan Has a ring of truth :)
Adstar · 56-60, M
People have the free will to decide if something is good or bad..

But like a drug addict Who knows the drugs are bad for her.. People can end up doing things they know are bad..
hlpflwthat · M
The will or intent is free. Actual accomplishment will vary from one individual to the next.

What do you think?
intent is most deftly most certainly not free wow I’m a little shocked u said that I have to step back an have a moment to my self shrugs @hlpflwthat
hlpflwthat · M
@1231231231a Perhaps you read more into the word than I do.

noun
noun: will; plural noun: wills
1.
the faculty by which a person decides on and initiates action.

control deliberately exerted to do something or to restrain one's own impulses.

a deliberate or fixed desire or intention.
With your deftion of intent I think my reaction was on. Point sir-mam @hlpflwthat
hunkalove · 61-69, M
No such thing as free will. We are all victims of our own karma, for better or worse. We can only do what we can.
nobody etc is free to do what ever they wish there is always restrictions
StevetheSleeve · 31-35, M
There’s enough free will to make you believe you have it, so it’s real.
Free will is the ultimate illusion in life. Knowing this makes life a bit easier I guess.

revenant · F
@1231231231a you can try in your head and even then you have been limited and controlled, and you do not have much free will on this earth
thanks for explaining more I agree some people need this in there life @revenant
SW-User
You wanted to ask, right?
SW-User
Not in my opinion
SW-User
Not in all situations.
Crazymatt · 31-35, M
Illusion!
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
If its an illusion then you asking this question is determined and it'd be pointless.
Maeve19 · F
@MartinTheFirst
And that is essentially the dilemma of determinism. I was referring to exactly that when I asked the question, maybe I should have been more clear.
how so most people who I know who want to make there owne choices do just that doesn’t mean they should though or they could use improvement @MartinTheFirst

Yeah it's a magic trick really
