In your opinion, do people really have free will? Is it simply an illusion?

Religion says we have free will but then any little sin and you are going to hell. Christians dismiss this as, "Yep, you send yourself to hell, god is just giving you what you want".

But THAT aside, I know when you are young the world is telling you to go back to school get married have kids, join the military, do whatever. But after 18, life is YOURS to live as you see fit, you have to decide for yourself what you need and want, don't let others tell you how to live.

The question was in a way geared towards or at least in relation to the dilemma of determinism. Maybe I should have been more clear about that

@Maeve19 IN a way you do have free will but as you know, the world is going to try like hell to dictate your actions and thoughts.

Of course either way you are screwed. Look at this example - they push consumerism very hard but then people are shamed for being hoarders or you get punished when you rack up more credit than what you can ever pay off.

Or relationships - the idea of "being in love" is shoved down our throats from about the age of four or five but then when we get old enough to have be in love, our friends and family never like the people we get involved with.

So about the only "free will" we have is getting to decide which punishment(s) we want.
