What trend from the past would you like to see make a comeback?

Top | New | Old
Northerner · 70-79, M
I would like to see Good manners come back.
AbbeyRhode · F
@Northerner True! Too many people never learned basic respect for themselves and others. They walk around acting like spoiled, selfish children.
Northerner · 70-79, M
@AbbeyRhode I agree.
Mathis1 · M
@Northerner 100 percent
curiosi · 61-69, F
@curiosi Well, in all fairness and honesty, I have to say, that I am sometimes not very polite towards proglodytes. I don't lay into them without an invitation though.
curiosi · 61-69, F
@puck61 That's fine, my intention was that pc go away and return to civility.
SW-User
@curiosi Oh Hell yes!
TexChik · F
Integrity, honesty, common decency, and a strong work ethic
TexChik · F
@SW-User it was the rule , rather than the exception

@TexChik Yeah, it was taught at home and school.

Full service in stores and gas stations, no self-service checkouts…service with a smile

Children playing outdoors most of the day when the weather permits.

Families doing chores together so they all have time to go do things & have fun later.

Farm produce stands vs. the farmer’s markets which overcharge for things they’ve brought in from other states….profits directly to the farmers and no middleman.

More family farms, farmers on small farms tend to be conscientious about the foods they produce. They have to answer to locals. Corporate farmers focus on profits more than anything.

No permits needed for yard sales.

Swap meets where things are swapped rather than sold.

Goods manufactured to be durable.

Fix-it repair shops for small appliances rather than discarding stuff.

Co-ops for trade….bulk buying of groceries and other items. There were some of these here in the 1970’s.

Glass food containers manufactured in a way to become reusable. I remember when peanut butter jars were marked so they could be used as measuring cups. There is still one Oklahoma company that sells jellies & jams in glass jars that some use for drinking glasses. And a pasta sauce manufactured is selling pasta sauce in jars with measurements by ounces on the jars.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@cherokeepatti :) Yea, if I wanted to check myself out I'd have bought it on Amazon.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Heartlander They can still make plenty of money and serve the customer, the profits are going to greedy owners of corporations instead of spreading it out for jobs.
@cherokeepatti I like that list of yours.

Human decency
AbbeyRhode · F
@JupiterDreams Common sense and kindness, unfortunately not so common any more.
RubySoo · 56-60, F
....conversation!
AbbeyRhode · F
@RubySoo Yes! I've always felt that if a lot of the people who hate each other online actually met, they might be friends, or at least agree to disagree. It's much too easy to hate from behind a keyboard.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@AbbeyRhode Amen! Even polar opposites can find common ground when they talk. It took a while, but Communism and Capitalism came together to snuff out Hitler and the evil Nazis.

Leaded gasoline, 8 cylinder cars the norm. Bumpers made from actual steel.

California governed by Ronald Reagan
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Spacious porches with swings to sit in during the evening after dinner and greeting neighbors as they take an evening stroll.
@AbbeyRhode We're living in an age where many of our activities are geared to serve the economic machine. Sitting outside, talking and drinking tea, just doesn't serve the corporate design. Pity.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@PhoenixPhail Need more small local businesses and tell some of the corporations to stuff it
@cherokeepatti I'm with YOU! 👍
When I was a little kid, riding with my parents and the car needed gas, they would pull into a service station. And service is what they got. Someone would come out, ask the driver how much gas they wanted, and what kind. And while the gas was pumping, he would wipe the windshield and check the tire pressure, adding some air, if needed. Then, a word of thanks as we departed.

These days, you'll never find it. And if you have to go inside to pay, you're lucky if you get even a smile from the person who takes your money, if they even bother to look at you.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@AbbeyRhode I spent about 9 months in NYC in the early 70s and it was common awareness that this was typical NYC behavior, which extended well into New Jersey and well beyond the city in all directions.

Rude drivers, rude service providers, rude cab drivers, rude everything. Like the definition of a microsecond was the time between the traffic signal turning green and some jerk honking their horn.

All my coworkers there were from the midwest, south or west, and jokes and comments about the NYC rudeness were pretty common. Polite and reasonable behavior was so uncommon there that coworkers would bring it up in casual chitchat. Like "WOW! I went to a coffee shop yesterday and the guy at the counter asked me how I wanted my coffee!", or "The cab driver said 'Thanks' and smiled after I paid him!".

One game that practically everyone played was to wait at a fast food counter until the attendant addressed the customer; with like "what can I get for you?" or "May I help you", or "Can I take your order?", etc. The usual reception, however, was more like "I ain't got all day, what do you want?", or "What, you just standing there?". Once I got waved aside with a hand gesture as he addressed the person behind me with "NEXT!".

I remember a Jersey friend one saying that the rudeness use to be just a NYC thing, and now it's Jersey too. And one day it will be Kansas.

@PhoenixPhail great comment... true!

@Heartlander Another great comment.... Tragically true. God help us. Makes me so mad I could spit nails.

Record stores, music with melodies that make sense, movies that make sense, schools that make sense, governments that make sense.

People that make sense, doctors without political agendas, lawyers with ethics.

The rotary phone, the use of cash, kids who actually play outside with other kids, parents who interact and raise their children to have moral character.

Farmers and ranchers who can farm and raise livestock without the interference from environmental cultists.

Criminals who go to jail when committing crimes. A secure border, a national debt that can be paid off.

Flea markets, yard sales and lemonade stands that don't require government permits or tax numbers for vendors.

Low gas prices and low property taxes. Banks who have real interest rates, so people could save money.

In other words get back to a country which is free and not a leftist technocratic totalitarian police state run by power hungry satanists
Respect. Chivalry. Honor. Patriotism. Hard Work. Discipline. Godliness. Two Genders. National autonomy. Manliness and Womanliness. Courage.
.........all that good old John Wayne and John Birch stuff. 🇱🇷

AbbeyRhode · F
@Driver2 Amen to that! The same "teachers" who wouldn't hesitate to have a kid expelled for the heinous crime of mentioning God, instead fill their heads with political propaganda, hate and violence.
Driver2 · M
@AbbeyRhode and they basically have no right to speak unless they agree
AbbeyRhode · F
@Driver2 I would hate to have a child in school these days. I'd very likely end up home-schooling.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Durable clothing in classic styles that stays in style till it’s worn out.

Cashiers counting out change old-school style instead of just handing it to you.

Children being taught responsibility and held accountable for it so they’d feel like adults once they become one.

Home Ec as a career option and not being belittled. Look at what’s happened since some colleges closed out that option in classes….fast food restaurants boomed, more processed frozen foods sold in grocery stores, more obesity, more chemicals in food to clog up livers, type II diabetes has become way too common, and a few enterprising people like Martha Stewart becoming extremely wealthy by teaching adults the skills that we were taught in Home Ec.

Health & Hygiene being taught as a mandatory class in high school.

Bartering whatever we have excess of or can make ourselves. Organized regular Swap Meets to help make it easier and to have some community & a little fun on the weekends.

Others who are brave enough to dump their dumb ass phones in the pocket of their coats and who are willing to come in and join others for eye contact and honest conversation.
It's gone of course in this "modern" age but, there are still pockets of people, rural people who hold out. At least, that is my supposition.
Royrogers · 61-69, M
Yes just like that, no manners @eyeno
eyeno · M
@Royrogers ya..,once told my son years ago when visiting me on the Big Island and staying for a week.

As we traveled around the island (two hundred miles), noticed he constantly checked his phone. So I said, "you should get off that phone and look at the beauty of the island, you don't know what your missing, because one day this will all gone".
So Sad...
Freeranger · M
@eyeno Straight up man. Not advocating the slap piece, but I would definitely make that our last nite out. The great mystery in life like this is that, he probably passed a host of wonderful girls on the way out who would have been perfect for him....and vice versa. Sort of a cool contemplation don't you think? How many potential people have a man or woman rubbed shoulders with, or passed on a sidewalk who might have been that right match if life had intervened....
Hikingguy · 56-60, M
The fact we were waaay nicer to each other back in the day. People just seemed to get along better.
Mathis1 · M
@Hikingguy Yes... we used to call that phenomenon, "civilization."
Hikingguy · 56-60, M
Right? Everyone is so quick to throw hateful insults at each other. Sad@Mathis1

this is an old post obviously, but I've just come across it from your archives so I'd like to respond.
I love the style of the 19th century, particularly 20's-40's. British tweeds, three piece suits and fedora's. There existed a greater sense of style then. Even regarding automobiles. Oh, the grace and style of a LaSalle....

Big family picnics. My family used to gather once a year, sometimes even twice. There were too many to fit in a house, so we would rent a covered table at a local park, and sometimes the municipal swimming pool would be close enough so that the children could run across the field and go swimming.

Everyone brought a covered dish...and we could sample fried chicken, and six different kinds of salads. The uncles would always be there frying hamburgers and hot dogs on the grills, and we children would fight over the last grape nehi in the cooler...😆

I used to love those picnics. But now my family is scattered to the four winds...like the seeds of a dandelion. 😞
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@4meAndyou

Lots of baked/roasted poultry .... chicken, duck, turkey, but fried poultry seems to have come on later. Probably because of war when cooking oil and lards were heavily rationed.

What lard was available then was probably hoarded to be used for fried seafood :)
4meAndyou · F
@Heartlander My family were all farmers. They had pigs, cattle, and chickens. I remember a story my mother told me, about her mother rendering fat in her oven. She took out the pan, but the hot fat spilled onto her legs and burned her pretty badly. My grandfather apparently knew nothing about burns, because he put butter on them.

By the time I came along, rationing wasn't an issue, and fried chicken was sooo awesome! My grandmother used to use Crisco.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@4meAndyou I think food rationing in the US came to an end within a few years of the end of the war. In Europe and the UK much longer. My dad was a grocer who went through the depression and war years.

I remember the butter on a burn treatment. I believe most of the world once believed that :)

Maybe not so much a trend, but people knew there was a time and place for everything and didn't share personal things with the world.
PatKirby · M
@SW-User
with internet, I see a lot more people sharing sex stories, fetishes, etc..

I see what you mean. I figure this is the way people really are inside and are just waiting to bust loose and share anonymously what they don't share publicly. Kinda like the Roman days where people's lascivious activity was common daily knowledge and out there right in the open for the world to see. A bit like taking the Id in human nature out for daily walks with the dog.

Btw, I used to have a pet with a similar name as yours called BreezyBreeze who was the most behaved and disciplined pet I ever knew.
SW-User
@PhoenixPhail I don't really have much to say. It's internet.
SW-User
@PatKirby I hope your pet was seen as sweet and not just a biter! lol

I only know that some things really shouldn't be shared with the world. I feel like nothing much is really special to people anymore.
House calls made by doctors. Today it might well be a PA or NP.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@soar2newhighs When we lived on the farm our family doctor was an osteopath. He made house calls for urgent things when his clinic was closed after hours or weekends. Drove out to the farm one day when my little sister had hives. She had eaten a half a quart jar of yellow mustard. Gave her a shot and told her not to eat anything the rest of the day but within a couple hours she was crying so my aunt fed her. He also came out one Sunday when I had strep throat ,was staying with farm neighbors while my family was moving our stuff back to the farm. And he came out when I was born, it was during an ice storm & my mom had quick labor. He didn’t make it on time but everything turned out OK, he checked us over & filled out my birth certificate. Doc Bailey had a walk-in clinic, first come, first served unless it was very urgent.
